Australia's George Miller's tap-dancing penguin film Happy Feet won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

"Oh gosh," a surprised Miller said as he collected his award.

"My kids gave me a lucky coin, a lucky penguin, but my real good luck was to work with hundreds and hundreds of amazing people, a wonderful cast, great artists, computer whizzes, a studio that were passionate, people who cut trailers, dubbed the movie, got it into the theatres and on their behalf I thank the Academy for this," he said.

It was a monumental victory for the Australian film industry and 61-year-old Miller, who had been nominated for Oscars three times - once in 1993 for Lorenzo's Oil and twice in 1996 for Babe - but never won.

Happy Feet was made at Sydney's Fox Studios with a largely Australian crew of more than 500 and used the voices of Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Steve Irwin and other Hollywood stars, including Robin Williams and Elijah Wood.

Bookmakers did not believe Happy Feet could win, with Cars the overwhelming favourite.

Helen Mirren best actress as expected for The Queen and Forest Whitaker best actor for awesome Last King of Scotland. Still hard to beat his role in The Crying Game IMO.

I usually enjoy most of the kids movies that we take my son to see, but I found Happy Feet to be one of the most boring unentertaining kids movie I've ever seen. Cars was 100 times better, it should have won for sure.

Dogfights marathon was a zillion times better than the Hollyweird lovefest. I like a good movie as much as the next fat person (name that movie) - but I refuse to lend any credence.....well I shan't go on........ good for the Penguin movies!

Patman - there was something probably politically not fitting with Cars or one of the folks involved. So, no award. It's all so silly, don't you see?

Anyway, I liked "March of the Penguins".

Wasn't this like the 247th awards show televized within the last four months?

Seems as if the entertainment/mass media industry is doing all it can to promote itself.

I was under the impression that we were watching a Global Warming documentary, not the Oscars.

I'm happy for George Miller as he wrote and produced Mad Max and The Road Warrior, two of my favorite films. It's also great to see the Australian film industry get this level of recognition.

I didn't see Happy Feet as I'm not interested in the overly political/environmental message the film promotes. I would not be surprised to find out this is what gave Happy Feet the edge over Cars.

In Hollywood it's liberal enviromentalism over car guy fantasy every day of the week and especially on Oscar's night.

You're right.

I've always found the Oscars boring.

I think it would be hilarious if Al Gore and the global warming community turned out to be 100% wrong. LOL. I guess he could always win for science fiction. LOL

The girlfriend had the oscars on last night, watching it very closely and she seemed to enjoy it.

As for me, I could barely watch 5 minutes of that garbage.

I retreated to my room to watch dragracing on espn2.

The oscars just aren't entertaining to me.

I'm not a huge movie buff, we do go see a few at the cineplex per year, but most of my movie watching is dvd's I got from the library and burned them for my own purposes.

I've even found blockbuster to start to be a ripoff, I don't even want to go in there anymore.

4 dollars or whatever for a dvd that I can buy new for 10-11 bucks?

Its silly.

Exactly. The people who appear to hate this country the most, love them selves the most.

If I had access and control over a media segment, I would self promote all day and all night.

This is exactly what Holloywood does. It gives them an air of credibility and importance. These shows are well hidden infomercials.

Well put. And right on the mark, too.

John.

I sort of agree with Patman.

Happy Feet was the first movie I took my daughter to, and I was a little disappointed in the movie given what the occasion was.

I watched NHRA drag racing.
As for the Oscars.....it's the people who do make believe that give themsleves an award

Egotisical, vain, and hipocritical.
just my 2cents worth. Canadian that is.

some people watch NASCAR...
some people go to movies/theater/ watch TV

different groups people-very different interests

I think it was great that environmental awareness was a major point during oscars.

I could give a fruit for what they talk about at the Oscars..... but seriously has anyone seen a multiday big studio movie being filmed in a small town? Eco-friendly it ain't! And when they leave? Trash everywhere. Just pointing out a disconnect.
