I went to O'reillys and I find the original oil size filter, finally! I don't know if they make them any more, but they are hard to find so I bought to hole shelf @ 3.69 each.

why did they downsize the oil filter? I used to use that one on my ford ranger and it was a decent size filter compared so some cars ive seen.

They aren't made anymore, you are just buying old stock.

In some applications, the reduced size is a blessing that enables easier removal/replacement due to cramped access.

Junior...I assume "...to hole..." means 'the whole'.

Regarding the downsizing of some FL-820S to the FL-500S spec change, I don't know FoMoCo's rationale, but the flow rate & by-pass pressure between the two filters is significantly different, reportedly due to a change in the oil pump pressures in some engine applications, e.g. the 3.0 V6 (2009-2011 Fusion).

So far, the Purolator branded versions of the FL400s (the L/PL20195) are still the original, longer length. When P1s could be had for just over 2 bucks I snagged about 15 of 'em. I throw 'em on Toyotas too! :-)

cool.. I always wondered why the FL400S was shorter than then 51516. I guess that wasn't always the case.

Is there some evidence for this? It would be very comforting to know if that is correct. I've wondered about the reduction of media content, e.g. when Ford started spec'ing the smaller FL-500S instead of the former FL-820 on some apps.

I saw a thread back awhile ago where the new ones are about the same.

The only reason i try to find the original sized FL400s is for the higher oil capacity. I found the last one locally at pepboys. They don't make them anymore, just older stock that no one bought.

Correct. The factory filters lack all the graphics found on vendor & Ford parts sources. I've wondered how both would appear if cut open and the internals compared.

Stated here many times: Ford OEM = Champion made. Motorcraft aftermarket = Purolator made. A comparison would be interesting.

Also it makes it real easy to find out when someone is lying about changing their oil when the motor takes a dump at 30k miles. I've seen it more than once, when that OEM filter is still on there and the customer shows fake oil change records.
