Origin of name "Cleveland Browns"

The team's current marketing associates the name with a generic brown dog. So it is a "named after an animal" team now. NFL animals are almost all cats or birds, except for the Browns, Dolphins, and Rams. In other sports, several teams are named after colors.

I had multiple alternate names for the Cleveland Browns yesterday as I sat in Paycor Stadium watching them humiliate my Bengals.....

There was the AL MLB St Louis Browns. The father of a childhood friend had been a minor league pitcher with them and occasionally called up to the big leagues. Post WWII service.

No idea where the Browns name came from, but they moved to Baltimore in the 1950's and renamed as the Orioles.
