NFL Teams are mostly named for Animals, Birds, or types of people. Even the Buffalo Bills are a reference to "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The Jets were originally the Titans, but became the Jets when they started playing home games at Shea Stadium, which had jets roaring overhead at low altitude, as the stadium was at the end of a runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

Then there are the Cleveland Browns. WHAT IS A "BROWN"??

They were named "Browns" by an original owner, Paul Brown. Who named the team after himself. What ego.

And what is weird is, the present Cleveland Browns are not even that team. The original Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens. The present Browns are a replacement expansion team.

I think the New York Yankees should be re-named the New York Steinbrenners.

And the Dallas Cowboys should be the Dallas Joneses. All the teams in their division could be trying to keep up with the Joneses.

What about the Chicago Reindorfs and the Chicago Wrigleys? How about the Chicago Juicy Fruits? The Chicago Bill Veecks? Every year they can destroy a different music genre like they did to Disco. But how? Vinyl is way too expensive today. Actually, Paul Brown was a highly respected head coach before he was an owner. He deserved to have a team named for him.

What's the point of this thread? Are you looking to bash the franchise, because "brown" suggests some ethnic entity?

What I KNOW, is that the people that live in and around Cleveland LOVE their football team.

I lived in the area when the Modell Browns left the area, and moved to Baltimore. It was a travesty for the area. So bad, that the NFL agreed to award Cleveland a new franchise.

Sadly, the ownership group for the Brown's has never gotten their act together. I, for one, will celebrate then they do!

The point of the thread is, while everyone knows what an Eagle, a Panther, or a Saint is, it is not obvious to someone who does not know the history and origin of the name what a Brown is. And the team that was created and originally named the Browns is now in another city as the Ravens.

Ever wonder where the term "taxi squad" came from? There were strict limits on the number of players a team could have. There weren't enough players to hold a full practice. Since Paul Brown owned a fleet of taxi cabs, he hired extra players to drive his taxi's. When it was time for practice, all the cabbies would head to the practice field to practice. Maybe it was hard to find a cab during this practice hours.

Wonder if this was the case for the St Louis browns too… my great grandfather played for them for a bit.

Interestingly, they also went to Baltimore.
