Seams pretty helter skelter when you do a search for a particular brand with what you get in the search results as you can not just do a search on the titles of the posts.

Could the UOA are be categorized into Brands at least, realize would be complex to go beyond that (weights etc.) but would think categorizing by brands would be straight forward.

Or is there some way to do an advanced search in which the search only looks at titles of posts.

Regards,

I'd rather see it organized by specific engine, which would make it more meaningful. I like your thinking here Fallguy and agree it can be hard to find UOAs.

Thanks,

Really Really like the website but the search function needs refined. If could just search titles I could put in something like "synpower UOA" And that would have to appear in the title. Or "3.5L UOA"

Then it would find post more relevant instead of the ones 5-20 pages long where somebody just mentioned UOA or synpower while talking about something else etc.

The BITOG Advanced Search isn't perfect, but I think the function works better than on the average forum. When it doesn't work, I'll use Google's Advanced Search on www.bobistheoilguy.com.

I agree, the brand of engine is the only feasible way to index UOAs, but it would still be a big job to undertake retroactively. The brand of engine is usually the same as vehicle manufacturer, but not always, as when Yamaha built SHO engines for the Ford Taurus.

Narrowing it down to engine code would take considerably more work. This index would require converting engine descriptions by year, model, cylinders, configuration, liters, etc into an engine code, which would take some research. Multiply this work by thousands of UOAs.

In an ideal world, every UOA on BITOG would have multiple indexes:

oil brand
oil viscosity
oil sump capacity
oil added
oil additives used
oil filter
air filter
date
mileage on oil
mileage on vehicle
months in service
climate
driving severity (mild or severe)
major problems (coolant leak, air intake leak, sludge, etc)
oil performance (excellent, good, fair, poor, etc)
vehicle year
vehicle make
vehicle model
engine configuration
engine size
engine code
engine mod (performance chip, turbo, oil cooler, thermostat, etc)

I build a tool to create 'clean' images from Blackstone PDFs a while back. My longer term plan was to pull the numbers from the PDFs and create a real database of numbers. I never continued the project because people didn't seem too interested in the tool, but I also never really talked about the longer term problem. Anyhow, if there is interest, I can continue development.
