Opinion on money pit

That's true, i've seen my share of import lemons as well. I'm not trying to imply that imports are better or anything like that, just my personal preference. Hopefully it's nothing major. I just checked the oil yesterday actually, and everything looked great under the oil filler cap as well (nice and shiny, no sludge). I wonder what the heck it could've been.

If its a Honda, don't bother spending any money to fix the rust, just keep doing the maintenance and you will get another 10 years out of that car.

Maybe you got all that rust cause you live up north.

It spent the first 11 years of its life in Massachusetts, and it's been here in Michigan for almost a year now

It was also a poor design on the rear quarter panel where it meets the bumper that causes the rust, even if you take good care of it, or live somewhere where rust isn't as common. Stuff like dirt, water, and salt for those of us in snowy states gets trapped in the little rubber chip guards that were placed on the rear fenders and caused rust to manifest itself beneath it. Love the car aside the little cosmetic things

Update on the car situation! The dealer I purchased the car from found the original car mats in his garage (his son owned it for a couple of months from the original owner) along with, get this, a MOUNTAIN of maintenance records. This lady maintained this car so well, and paid for the car twice! She had the muffler replaced 3 times, oil was changed every 3500-5500 miles with bulk dealer oil and oem honda filters (and one receipt showed -shudders- a fram!). The engine is spotless even with 5000+/6 month oil changes. This made my day, definitely like Christmas! Even has the original sticker, tags, etc.!

Yikes, that muffler replaced 3 times sounds excessive to me, my 94 is still on its original one.

Good to hear however about getting your records, probally worthless in terms of value to the car, but it gives you a good idea on what was done to it, and when you need to replace certain things (maybe your timing belt is new, maybe it's 90,000 miles old ect).

Indeed

She replaced the alternator belt, water pump, and timing belt at 72k back in 2002. Plan on getting it done again probably next year

I don't know what to think about the muffler situation, but the one I have is sounding kind of bad already, I think instead of going OEM if it needs one, i'll just spend a little bit extra to replace all of the piping and replace the header along with a catback, and do it myself for probably the same price the acura dealership would charge for an OEM

If you really plan on keeping the car, get a stainless system. I've got a full stainless exhaust on my 1997 Monte, and even after 8 brutal New York winters and a 2 not-so-brutal winters here in Oklahoma (I know my profile says MD, I lived there for 3 months and never changed it) it is still all original.

Timing belt is due every 90k so you have time. Do the whole exhaust yourself if you can get a lift otherwise have it done. Some systems are just too difficult done on ramps.

that teggy sure took a lot of cash. congrats on finding the records!! First thing I'd check is if she changed the ball joints. You don't want the wheel to fall off on you. Also check that timing belt, Honda made sure that you have to replace the head when it snaps. How hard is it to cut valve pockets in the pistons? anyway.... I say go for 10,000bucks!! Why stop now?

She changed the CV boots, but I don't know if she changed the ball joints, i'll have to check that out. The belt's only 5 years old/50k miles
