I've been eyeballing some of the new combo wrenches that ratchet on the open end. I know craftsman and gear wrench both offer them -- don't know about any other brands.

I'm interested in feedback of anyone who may have these good or bad, TIA.

I hear from hommies in the service sector, auto mechanics, and construction business tell my father that Craftsman tools are very durable and last a long time with proper care and not torture and abuse. However, I am not familar with gear wrench brands.

Are you talking about the type that have a funny cutout on the open end? if so I've found them to be frustrating and of little practical use. The wrench has to be fully seated to turn the fastener, if not the wrench slips.

I have them, Craftsman, as well as Gear Wrench, and both are good tools. I like the Craftsman tool better it just feels a bit stronger. The rachet side of the wrench is good for fast work, however if you are trying to break something loose use the open end side of the wrench. You already knew that though! :)

The open end of a wrench is the weaker side, and also does not have as much contact area. To break something loose you want to use the box end of a non-ratcheting wrench.

Yep, like these craftsman and these gear wrench

They tend to slip when using the open end. I have some and really don't like them. You are better off just getting regular combo wrenches.

i use the blackhawk ones that mac sells, they are about the best i've ever used, and i've never broke one which is saying alot since i use them everyday and have been doing so for 5 yrs.

These were in fashion when i was a kid then disappeared now they make a return.
I have some and to be honest they are the last wrenches in the box to get used, now i think of it i haven't used them at all other than to try them, they were a PITA and too gimmicky.
IMO you will find a regular combo wrench with ratcheting box end more useful.

I've had a set of Stanleys for about 6 years now, and I haven't had a problem yet. I don't use them everyday, but I probably use them as much as any DIY'er would.
