Ooma - who here uses it?

I am looking at Ooma, I want to use it for a phone line and a fax line, total 2 lines.

Q1: who gives me the phone#s?

tell me how you are using it and level of satisfaction pls.

I am keeping my att line for DSL but will add a second phone and another fax line.

any ongoing costs?

Been using it for years.

We ported our old number to Ooma, otherwise they will assign you a number in your desired area code.

We are very satisfied with it and used it for several years with AT&T 'dry loop' (no phone) DSL.

We have the Ooma Premier subscription, but besides the monthly taxes & fees there are no 'required' ongoing costs. No experience using it with a fax machine, fortunately... those things need to go away.

Been using it for about 3 years now. I just have the single line with no bells and whistles. High quality VOIP. I just use it for a home phone. Much better quality than cell phone. I ported my number. I think they will assign numbers.

We've been using Ooma for almost 2 years now and thus far I've been very pleased with it. We made the switch after the tornados of 2011 took out our local landline phone service and we realized that "Ma Bell" was no more reliable than cell phones or Internet. Ooma VOIP quality is excellent and service has been very reliable. We ported over our old number for about $40, so no problem keeping your old number. You get unlimited long distance phone service within the USA and much of Canada. They do charge you for taxes, which amounts to about $3.75 per month for us.

Also, you can operate extension phones through your house wiring via Ooma. You need to be absolutely sure to disconnect the wire connecting the outside landline to your house phone lines via the phone box! Otherwise you might fry your Ooma box, or so I've heard. We basically operate our corded and cordless phones just like we used to when we had "Ma Bell".

Just keep in mind that if you have alarm system you may need to mess around with the wires in your homes ( the ooma box cannot power all your wires if you have big house )

You also need to disconnect the outside line , should be pretty easy job.


Voip services are going to take off , and I personally am a BIG fan.

Been using it for years with both ATT dryloop DSL and a lower tier Comcast internet line. Rarely an issue. As mentioned porting an existing number is around $40 or so. I have the original Ooma Hub which doesn't require any fees or taxes to be paid at all. The new Ooma Telo will charge a monthly tax of a few dollars.

I know faxes can be done but I never got it to work correctly. Ooma has a good forum on their website that can answer questions about teh fax and anything else you are wondering.

I highly recommend the product. I wanted to go exclusively cell phone but the wife wanted a land line...this was a good compromise.

I know you asked specifically about Ooma, but I wanted to say that I use several Obihai devices which are similar. You have to purchase 911 service if you want it, but it isn't required. I have Google Voice accounts on the Obihai devices and calling is free. It works fine, the only oddity is that for caller ID you get only the number unless you subscribe to a lookup service. If you pay for 911 then this will sometimes come along for free.
