If the manufacturer says use Dexron II, is it okay to use Dexron III?

Are they the same?

A) They're not the same.
B) Most Dexron-III fluids are supposed to be backwards compatible with Dexron-II applications.

You're not likely to find anything labelled Dexron-II these days. I thought I saw that Red Line ATF was still labelled Dexron-II for years after the Dexron-III standard came out.

Check out the Specialty Formulations order sheet.

The new HPS synthetic PS fluid is available; just doesn't show up on main product page.

Product Data Sheet: HPSGlide
High Performance Synthetic Power Steering Fluid

HPSGlide is recommended as a replacement for most power steering fluid systems except Honda. HPSGlide combines the best in additive technology and synthetic base oils to provide a robust, all temperature Power Steering Fluid.

HPSGlide quiets noise in most power steering pumps while reducing leaks. Anti-Wear agents reduce power steering pump and rack wear. Cleaners and dispersants guard against particulates that build up on valves and pistons.

This lubricant fluid has a low pour point for cold weather driveability, and possesses excellent high temperature stability against oxidation and shearing (viscosity loss) at high temperatures. Inhibitors prevent rust and varnish buildup. Friction modifiers reduce power requirements at all temperatures.

Note: Do NOT use in Honda power steering systems.

Directions: Tighten or replace power steering belt and make sure belt has no cracks on underside that might cause slipping or loss of Steering System control. Replace old fluid by repeatedly using a Turkey Baster until fluid is clean, or remove low pressure hose and let drain. Replace hose, tighten clamp and then refill reservoir. Do not add any aftermarket additives to this fluid.
