I was thinking about picking up a good, rugged daily driver so I can keep the miles low on my Z and use it for more of a weekend cruiser per se.

I`ve always like Oldsmobiles and I was looking at a few Auroras. I really like the looks of them. They have a 4.0 liter V8. Anyone here familiar or have any experience with these cars?

Careful with the baby nothstar up to i believe 2000 there were a lot of head bolt issues, they would come loose for no apparent reason, turns out the threads came right out of the aluminum block.Time Serts were the official fix and cost a fortune to do the job,if i remember it was around 22 hrs.

Holy Moly!!!!!!! The one I`m looking at is an 01. It`s got 76,000 miles and they`re asking $6500 for it.

aw man, here's a guy that could really do with a free Aurora V8, and yesterday I saw a video of them seizing up a beautiful condition Aurora V8 for C4C. Why is this WORLD run so inefficiently? forget cars and fuel economy

I'd get an Intrigue with the 3.8 or 3.5 Shortstar for less money and most likely less headaches.

My brother had a 1996 for quite a few years. It was trouble free for him and he absolutely loved that car. He bought it used from a neighbor with ~80Kmi and my nephew managed to totalled it on him a year or two back w/ 130K on it. As with any 'fancy' car, there's lots of potential for problems. You win a few and loose a few. The 4T80E trans tends to be trouble free.

The motor should be fine on that year, thread inserts with different head bolts were factory upgraded.
The other major issue with this and almost every other N* is what sound like piston slap when cold.
It could well be but more often than not its extreme carbon build-up in the combustion chambers, especially if driven slow around town for longer periods.

The fix if needed is to pour 1/4 can of gm top engine cleaner down each plug, install the old plugs and leave it overnight.Water doesn't seem to shift it in this engine,Seafoam creates more smoke than benefit.

Start the engine, warm it up then drive it with a little enthusiasm,no need to beat it.
Change the oil/filter and possibly the plugs.

Once clean or on engines that have no issues Redline SL-1 in small doses every tank will keep it clean.Amsoil pi works very well also but cant be ran every tank therefore IMO the Redline is probably the better solution in this case.

I cant comment on the price.
A 2001 that has had good maintenance is in excellent condition with lower miles is worth a heck of a lot more than beat 2001 high mileage pig.If anything use any book values as a base starting point reference only then add/subtract.

I agree the Olds is nice looking car, possibly one of the nicest jelly beans out there.

They didn't make a 2000 model. I had a Green 2001, first year of the new body style. It was loaded - 4.0V8 (forget the 6), all the options. I loved that car and it was trouble free. I traded it on a truck after 5 years and 55k miles. Still looked brand new.

You can probably get that car for 5k! Buy it, they are smooth cars and looks like a Lexus.

^^That`d be awesome! I plan on showing up there with cash in hand :^)

I recall going to an outdoor car show when I lived in Denver. Several local car dealers had new models out to whet the public's appetite. One was the second-gen Olds Aurora, and one guy I spoke to who'd driven one said, "You'll love it, it drives like a BMW."

My one test drive in the first-gen model impressed me, but it was too new (read: too pricey) for me then. I hate to see a survivor of that generation driving around, banged up, uncared for.

The first-gen was one of my favorite cars produced by GM. Futuristic, stylish, with guts. It had some of the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in as well.

Then they butchered it in the 2nd generation, adding superfluous holes and vents in the nose where they weren't needed. Made it look like a bloated Intrigue.

Here's to the Aurora...the car I thought would save Oldsmobile, and the only Olds I ever wanted to grace my driveway. It's nauseating to watch one purposely killed.

Ditto. 1st Gen Aurora was an amazing car for the time. Test drove one when they first came out. Simply waay ahead of any other American car. Period.
