I had one for 4 years and sold it for $35. Cleaned it 3 times.

In my 5 years of automotive experience I've never seen a k&n wear out from normal, not excessive (harsh cleaning, ect), use.

I've got a K&N in my '98 Blazer. I bought it the same day I brought the truck home. It's been over six years. Just took it out to clean int last month

The one on my 1991 Plymouth Acclaim I installed in January of 1995 when the car had about 15,000 miles on it and it now has 176,000 on the odometer.
I think next time I moght chose an Airaid unit.

I put one on my Supra back in '89. Cleaned it 4 times, approx every 30K miles. Has over 126K on it now. 15 years of use and still looks good to me.

Purchased a K&N in box filter for my 78 VW Rabbit in 1983 -- ran that filter for 10 years cleaning it only twice. Moved the filter over to my 89 Dodge 3.0L caravan in 93 (same filter size as VW) and am still running it in that vehicle today a total of some 21 years of trouble free use. I clean it about every 4 years (45K to 50K miles). Use the K&N cleaning fluid and lightly oil with K&N oil. The perimeter seal is always coated with K&N grease.

Nice. I cant beleive people have run them for so long.

SPITMAN, have you had any problems with your Rabbit because of the filter letting in dirt particles, that caused any oil burning or engine life problems??

StanW, have you had any problems from it?

I ran the Rabbit for a total of 23 years and logged only about 150K mi. -- It always ran strong and only consumed oil when the origional valve guide seals failed (replaced under an extended warranty)-- no other engine internals were ever replaced in those 23 years. It was one of the finest cars I have ever owned -- replace it with a 2001 1.8T GTI which will not see a K&N filter as the OEM filters are much superior now-a-days.

As the K&N now lives in my 89 Dodge the Dodge is experiencing no unusual engine wear -- has had the valve guides & seals replaced as well. It leaks more oil than it consumes and lives on a steady diet of used oil I drain out of the other vehicles with only seeing annual spring time changes consisting of 2 liters (50%) new synthetic along with 2.5 liters of used synthetic having about 3K km of use already. it takes about 2K of used makeup oil over the year and the van sees about 7 to 8K Km of usage throughout the year.

I try to get at least 20 years of use out of each vehicle I purchase.

Since this is my initial post, I first want to thank the site originator(s ?) and the members for sharing some great knowledge here. I registered several months ago, bought and installed Auto-Rx in my two trucks in September and was going to post once I had some results to share.
I installed a K&N air filter in my 96 Dodge Ram in either late 95 or early 96. I do clean and oil it annually and have not perceived any problems with it. seal seems as pliable as when it was new. Overall I'm happy with it.
I also stopped using Fram (regular) oil filters due to what I have read here.

Welcome to the BITOG Bear. Your going to learn alot here.

You say you put your K&N in around the time you bought your Dodge. Do you still have the dodge with the K&N now? How many miles are on the car and does it burn/leak any oil?

Oops, I forgot to include some details. The truck now has 97,000 miles on it and just in the past year stated to "lose" oil. No apparent leak or smoke, but I'm adding one quart every 1,000 miles or so. I'm hoping the ARX treatment will help. Before then no additional oil was necessary between changes. I have used either PZ or QS 10-30 all along. In August I bought a 99 Dodge Dakota w/ 45,000 miles on it, and it is also getting the ARX treatment. I will report in on both trucks here as well as on the ARX site ( I'm registered as Dancing Bear on there and elsewhere) when the treatments are done.

My '92 GMC Sonoma has had three air filters in it's lifetime---the original AC, a replacement AC in '93, and a K&N installed in '94. The truck has almost 120,000 miles on it now and runs like new except for a little pinging when going up hills and accelerating quickly. I clean it about every other year and the filter still looks new---no problems at all with the K&N.

I've had a K&N filter in service since the summer of 1988. It was actually the first 'mod' I did to the car. I don't have a lot of miles on the filter. Right about 70,000. It's a 14" cone filter on a cold air set up for an '87 Grand National.

I've cleaned it about 4 or 5 times but haven't since about 1996 and ~25,000 miles. I put a prefilter on it at that same time and the internal air intake parts stay way cleaner now. So I don't bother with cleaning it all the time now.

I had and still have 14" round K&N on an offroad truck. Had it on there for 8 yrs but it shrank up so it could no longer be used. I used petrol based grease to seal around the edges, which apparently makes the rubber shrink. Had the same problem with a XR250 K&N. So for those of you that want to use grease to seal your K&N DON'T USE PETROLEUM BASED GREASE.

I haven't had any know problems with the filter yet but I have the first UOA coming soon. I have always spread a layer of white grease just before to air horn so I could see if a lot of dust was getting by. If this UOA comes in clean then I may keep it. Otherwise I'm going to use a paper wix. They have a 4"x 14" paper with a foam layer around the outside of it. Looks just right for heavy offroading/Dust.

I've been running K&Ns in my 88 IROC Camaro (it uses 2 of them) for at least 8 or more years. Truth is I don't really know exactly how long they have been in there, but they are pretty old. They get cleaned and re-oiled once a year. No problems or failures with either the media or seals. Engine runs fine.
