Old Yellow Bottle vs. Amsoil...my take

I debated whether or not to post this, but I thought I should. I want to put a disclaimer on this saying that I love both Amsoil and Pennzoil. No bias, no nothing. I use both and will continue to do so. Here goes..

I've used Amsoil on and off over the past couple of years. I've had nothing but great experiences with the products, customer service, and dealers (Pablo). Most recently, I filled my Mazda 3's ATX with their ATF at 6k miles, and have used ASM for the last 7.5K miles - Great products. However, I was in a pinch last weekend, and I went for the Pennzoil conventional 5w20. I have to say, the car runs just as smooth and quiet as it did on ASM. I was surprised, as ASM has always made my car run a little smoother, and I know others noticed this too. Gas mileage is the same, noise is the same, etc. I'll hopefully be driving less now, so maybe I'll stick with Old Yeller....Especially since I got a case at $1/qt.

Bottom line is...Amsoil ATF will stay in my ATX. However, in the crankcase, I may just stick with the PZ...for now.

I personally noticed no difference in engine smoothness between Havoline, Valvoline, and Amsoil in my car (all 5w30). I guess my butt dyno just isn't as finely tuned as some.

I believe the only seperation of the two oils will be OCI. But if you pay retail for Pennzoil and retail for Amsoil and figure cost per mile. They would be a tie, except for the labor to R&R the Pennzoil twice to Amsoils once.

Oils are a lot better today. They are of good quality and with very little difference between them. Most of it is marketing. Some are better than others though.

Most Amsoil changes are between 5 to 10,000 miles so the price is way more.

I ran Pennzoil Yellow for 30k miles before switching to M1 then Castrol.
Nothing bad about Pennzoil, just its hardly ever on sale, if i ran it again it will get changed every 3 to 4k.

Look, Amsoil is about long drains. TBN, stability against a degree of fuel dilution, high temperature tolerance in turbo-equipped engines, all are factors that point up Amsoil's advantages. At roughly 5-7 times the cost. If you do bypass, go a long distance between changes, and have a particularly taxing application, ya gotta go Amsoil. But even Pablo and **** would tell you the 3-5K OCI would be a total waste with Amsoil. Maybe not a total waste, but they would want your old oil for their car, put it that way.

So would I.

Not ever on sale? It is under 2 bucks a quart every day price and often much cheaper. It is one of the most heavily discounted oils. Every other week there one of the parts stores offers it on a rebate. That and GTX.

Old Yella wins and at more then half the cost! haha I agree 100% with your post.

I was taking a general 5K for the Pennzoil OCI, and 10K for Amsoil. These are safe numbers to work with for each oil.

I agree with that but there are many 5,000 mile syn oil changes. That is my only beef with synthetic oil. Not really what syn oil is for.

Not a fair debate between the yellow bottle and Amsoil. For 4to 5 thousand miles drains pennzoil will do a fine job. Run beyond that and you risk deposits and varnish build up. I have seen evidence in some of our company vehicles that they run up to 7 to 9000 miles on havoline or other new sm oils. Look at the valve trains and whew- Varnish and that ugly grit on your fingers. It is the fault of the person operating the company vehicle. The otc was much to long and usually a quart low. Now if we were using Amsoil the 7 to 9 thousand otc would work fine because of the PAO base oil. These were vehicles were foresters trucks with mixed driving and hard use. They pushed to conventional oil beyond it's limits.

I will when I get some for next oil change, and will possibly stay with it.
