Old Tecumseh

I reciently recieved from a neighbor, An Ariens 24" 8hp snow blower. Hasn't run in a "few years". Whatever gas that was in it has turned to Goo... & it has no spark. I know i have some work to do If I want to "restore" it. Is there anything that anyone can tell me about it,

out of my memory i recall that is a model h medium frame snow king engine with 8 horsepower. (hm80)

wow its been years sence i messed with a tecumseh snow king im supprised at myself for remembering.

I mess with these old Ariens quite a bit. That photo tells me that machine is in pretty good shape: definetly worth a re-hab. The carbs are troublesome, but a re-build will cost about $53. Install a thumb-screw metal gas shut-off under fuel tank as this is what starts the problem. Go to the Ariens site and order the manuals for your machine, they will still have them. Plan on changing 2 belts {1 for impeller & 1 for drive } the drive disc, scraper blade, 2 runners for either side. Make sure you remove the shear-bolts and grease the "rakes" and be sure they spin free as in a neglected machine these seize to its' shaft and this can get expensive. Drain out that gear oil in cast iron rotor box and put some Mobil 1 75W - 90 in there. Take off the 3 nuts and the big bolt on each side of the auger and check for wear on these 2 bronze bushings and lube with grease here too. While oil and gas is out of engine,tip her on the blower housing and remove 4 bolts and check the inner workings and lube as necesaary being careful not to get oil or grease on drive-dics plate. Oil for this machine is 5W-20 and I use the Motocraft SEMI. If you have the room,go on "CRAIGS LIST" and get a parts machine. Use this link for quality parts to your door.

Thats the kind of "stuff" I was looking for. I looked at the disc plate & the rubber drive wheel the rubber looks good, no cracks and around 1/4 to 1/2" of rubber left. I have ordered the the repair manual from arien, should be here any day now. Did you mean the carb rebuild kit or a rebuilt carb itself? One more... I know its hard to tell now, but, If the cylinder is scored and the bearings are really gone, valves are screwed, ( you get the picture) from sitting so long. Is it better to rebuild the short-block or replace? This is all on my "todo" list. with a new roof for the house coming in May, the car needs repair... Yada, yada, yada... it might be a while before I get to it.

heh, heh, I resurected this exact model. Its a great machine. I have about 30$ of new belts invested in it. The carb's main jet often gets plugged up with varnish. There is a small hole up in the threads leading into the center passage that is nearly invisible. I use a "hair" from a wire brush to clean it out. As long as the float and needle valve seat are OK, this is all that is necessary to rebuild a Tecumseh carb. I do blow out all the passages in the carb with carb cleaner too. Are you sure about the no spark ? I have yet to have this trouble with any Tecumseh engine. I would start with a new plug. This winter, it didnt see much use. I test ran it in Feb and it fired up in sub freezing temps on the 2nd pull of the recoil starter. I use conventional 10w30 oil. When I'm done running it I turn off the shut off valve and run the carb dry. I store it with a full tank of gas with Stabil and Marvel Mystery oil in it. I look at what Ariens sells now a days, and much prefer older ones. Last fall I found an even older unit at the dump. All it needed to blow leaves was some gas and the tires aired up.

You will get a lot of personal satisfaction {rare for most these days} in giving life to an old machine. The folks in Brillion made a rugged machine back then and with proper care outlined in their manuals, you possibly might NOT be able to wear it out! I see you're from Buffalo though, you certainly will get the chance to try! A new 8-24 Ariens would be over $1,000 so even if you spend a few hundred you are way ahead and have a better built machine than new. I have a 31 year old 5-20 that I bought new and still runs perfect, but wanted to "up-grade" to at least 8 HP for those BIG storms. Craigs list is littered with these older machines and with a few weeks looking I'm sure you'll find a good parts prospect. These Tecumseh engines have seemed to fall out of favor lately,as they were late to the party with the OHV design, but the older ones always start on the 2nd pull. I seriously doubt you'll ever use that electric starter I saw perched on top! I'll include another dandy link for OPE. Your high serial # is due to the famous "Blizzard of '78" which produced a surge in production of these as well as the shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive pick-up trucks in our respective areas. Thanx for the Link and hint for the carb. Yep, no spark, even with a new plug. Something is coroded(sp?) or there is a safty switch thats messed up. Is the right side lever for the auger supposed to be really loose? My next step will be to disconnect everything electric from the frame to the engine and try the engine as a "stand alone" to see if there is any spark.

In this day and age of 'obsolete in a couple of years' / disposable products, products too complicated for most to troubleshoot and fix, (has it always been like this ?), it's comforting to see a reply like this.

While entropy is creeping into all aspects of our lives, some manage to consistently win the battles :^)
