I work at a thrift store and someone donated this Purolator L14610 and I ended up buying it because why not, it was only 90 cents and it was the size my car (07 CR-V) uses.

Here are some pics of it, I apologize in advance if the pictures are huge, I am posting on my phone and cannot resize them. Can someone help me figure out how old it is and if I can go ahead and use it on my next oil change? Btw I poked at it with the end of a pen and the ADBV is pliable and seems to be in good shape. Thanks!

I'd use it on a beater. Having said that it is probably better than most of what came out of Purolator's facility in recent years.

if we take that character after the 6 to be a "D", that makes it either 1994, or 2012. but looking at the filter and it's box i'd be more inclined to say 1994.
they don't use "O", or "Q", so i'm not sure what else it could be...

btw: most filter manufacturers put their shelf life, in ideal climate controlled conditions, around 5 years.

I was going to post the EXACT same thing that you said...If the filter was kept in a damp basement or outside shed...I'd probably throw it in the garbage....and I'm a guy who has used 20 year old oil in my (older) cars...

It's a "Premium Plus" oil filter, surely it is still good, I would prefill the filter.

Premium, anything higher than OEM, and the "plus", must have more pleats......Says so right on box. "Pure oil now" this filter even CLEANS the oil! WOW!

Don't use it. That size is so common that it's easy to get a quality filter that was made recently and at a fair price

I threw away three Pure Ones from the concerned era. I rather throw them away, than give them to family or friends for free.

You wasted 90 cents. Those are unsafe to use.

There might be a copyright date on the bottom flap. I have one on my shelf that says copyright 1997 Purolator Products. Yours looks newer than that. My box is all white with a blue motif on the front. Yours looks more like early to mid 2000s. I have one that looks to be around the same time frame as yours as well (except its a pureone) and it says copyright 2004 Purolator Products, an ArvinMeritor brand on the bottom of the side of the box.

I would keep it as a conversation piece. It goes back more than 20 years before Purolator starting having issues. I used to use those plus's all the time before Purolator went bad.

I'll readily admit I'm cheap, and like a good buy as much as anyone. But you have to ask yourself the question of risk vs. reward. Here I'm just not seeing it. That same filter at Wal-Mart today is going to run you what? $4 bucks and change at most? So for an extra $3 bucks you've got the peace of mind of age not possibly playing a factor in something bad happening to your engine. That could end up costing you thousands.

Interesting date code. As noted, Puro doesn't use O or Q for years so unknown year. However, being a Prem+ that would be before they became Classic. So, ~2008 and earlier.

Old by any standard, with unknown storage, not worth the risk imo.

Wouldn't it have an 'N' (rather than an 'O') if it was made in 2003?
This filter manufacture date is a mystery because 'O' or 'Q' wasn't used by Purolator (as stated earlier)..

Throw it on your vehicle and run it.

It will be fine.

If you run across any 14670s let me know. Ill buy every one you find for .90c!
