Old Panasonic bike tires replaced with Continentals

Last Friday my wife and I rode across town for brunch. Coming back, her bike got a flat.

Interesting failure mode - the tread was not bad, but the sidewall on the back tire had developed some cracks, and the inner tube had oozed through, and and popped. Sort of like an aneurysm bursting I guess.

The tires were by Panasonic, from 2013. We rode from Banff to Jasper that summer, but then parked the bike for a few years. I did some mods to it about three years ago, and she's been riding it a lot ever since, so call it four riding seasons and perhaps 6000 km on the tires.

Anyway, I had repair stuff with me, so patched the tube and the three worst cracks on the sidewall, and we rode home avoiding rough patches. Made it home OK, which was good as 17 km would have been a long walk.

Later that day I bought two new Continentals in the same size (26" x 1.75"). I experienced a bit of sticker shock though - I had not bought tires in a while.

We rode 20 km yesterday and 33 km today, and the new tires have been really good so far.

Solid company!

I didn't think Contis were too bad. The Bontrager Race Lite whatever, now those were a pain.

I don't mind having to use a lever to get the tires on. Some might object but I haven't pinched a tube doing that in years. But I do wish they were a hair easier to get on.

Sadly just noticed that I have yet another flat.... guessing a patch gave up, as all my tubes now have at least one patch, and I've yet to really master the art. [I pinch flat several times a season, and have like 10 tubes in circulation. When I get 5 tubes in need of patching, open a new tube and patch all at once.]

pinch a tube? Just add a little air to the tube to get it round and shove up into the tire out of the way of the lever. But those Contis fight me all the way- off and back on. My Bontragers were a breeze. I'm suspect of anything with that name on it. IMO, the Contis are a much better tire-the tread rubber is like chewing gum grip!

Hadn't thought to add air, but still, haven't pinched one (and thus made an instant flat) in a very long time (if ever). Bit of effort for on/off. Not as easy as the old MTB tires that I remember in my youth (I remember using a regular screwdriver to unbead tires!).

Only had one kind of Bontragers and they came with the bike. Very good at avoiding flats but would have been miserable to change on the road. Some rim-tire combos are bad, maybe that set of rims wasn't good for it, no idea. But the Contis ride so much better that I don't care, zero desire to go back.

Got a flat on my new Continental Tire this afternoon. I was about 1 km out, so just walked the bike home. Check out that sharp little tack - can't blame the tire!

And I thought the tight Contis were just me... I won't buy them anymore. I pretty much stick to Vittoria now.
