Old Oil

I recently came across/acquired a still sealed 55 Gallon drum of Cenex Superlube 518, 15-40 CE-CD-CC, SF-SE-SD. It's probably at least 15 years old. Can I use it in anything (like a 2006 New Holland TV145 or a 1978 IH 466)? I hate to just send it out to the recycler who'll use it for fuel oil.

Open it, send out a sample for a virgin UOA, making sure you tell them it's 15 years old and see what happens. And post it here, of course. If it's good, and I think the likelihood is better than 50-50 that it will be, I think it would work in the 466 (you can check the certifications from the manual) but not the TV145, which I think is CI4 rated.

Thanks. I'll get a test and report back. I figured it'd be ok for the older engine. Does oil go bad all sealed up?

I could run that in my Mercedes which requires CF.

I imagine it needs to be shaken up abit before you take a sample.

Sealed oil stays good basically indefinetly...I'd use it w/o hesiatation.

If it's a drum, you will have to install a pump on it, and that should stir up the oil some.

Stir it thoroughly, then add some of it with a more modern oil and you're good to go.

Please do not recycle until used thoroughly as there are many antique tractor, truck and car collectors that would love to have this, I would use in anything its rated for after I rolled it around the floor for a while.
