We decided to do something different for our movie night and watched Vertigo, by Alfred Hitchcock. While slow to get going, it was a very enjoyable movie. We decided to make this Halloween season focused on older thrillers than modern scary movies. Any good recommendations for anything made before the 70's?

We've seen Birds, and Rear Window, which were both very good as well.

Thanks.

I've been watching movies from the 20's through 50's over the last year. I saw many James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart films. Recently - Angels with Dirty Faces, Roaring 20's, African Queen and The Public Enemy. I love the older movies.

I've taken some interest in some of the older horror classics; Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Fly, House of Wax. Wife and I caught Cape Fear on TCM, that's a good one.

Casablanca is thee all time classic and the most quoted movie.

For classic horror,, The Blob with Steve McQueen, Tarantula, Them, Phantom of the Opera (1943) and Plan 9 From Outer Space (rated the worst movie ever made and worth watching for that reason only). I am leaving a lot of classics out.

On Them, I never did understand why shooting an ant's antennae would matter.

Casablanca is great - and added a lot to the popular lexicon.

For cheesy too-bad-to-be-scary, Kingdom Of The Spiders is a classic.

You did say "thrillers", yes?

It ain't old, but a Harrison Ford movie called "What Lies Beneath" is a good thriller.
You get to see HF sailing a boat on Lake Champlain with the old Chimney Point Bridge in the background.
Afterwards, that bridge was blown up and a new one was built.

Also, see "Breaker Morant", an Australian movie about a court marshal during The Boer War.

1981. Yankee Stadium, Bronx. The consummate showman, actor, James Cagney throws out the first pitch of the 1981 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees October 1981 at Yankee Stadium .

I really like the old twilight zones. Don't forget get my favorite "Duel"..
This Alfred Hitchcock presents is good too and was filmed near where I live. So was tarantula.
I thought those rocks looked very familiar. Duel was a classic from the first viewing on tv. Nothing scarier than an old Peterbilt pulling a tanker. His driver license probably said, "No name given."

Tarantula was one of Clint Eastwood's earliest movie roles when he had just started acting.
