Old Detroit Diesel fire pump at work.

I had the very same fire pump at a place that I serviced. A shopping center. It was sure loud when it ran. The engine had a heater on 24/7. So it never had a cold start per se.

I've serviced oodles of those in the past. Thanks for the memory. My family runs a generator repair shop. I've seen those small fire pumps with 353s, 371s and 471s. Lots of 671, 12v71 8v92 and 16v149 generator sets as well. I have a love hate thing with them. I dig how they crank and ramp up to 1800 rpm instantly and I like how they respond to load changes but I HATE how they slobber oil everywhere when they're not loaded properly.

Even stationary/Gen Set applications? I'm sure many 2-stroke Detroit's run up & down the California coast....What about Locomotives?
Locomotive engines are not technically detroits unless it is a tiny yard engine or something. EMD was locomotives and a part of GM at one time. The largest 2 stroke Detroit was the 149 series.

1995 was when they stopped making most of the 2 stroke Detroits so Cali may have banned them but they were done anyways. The 149 series went to 1999.

Ours doesn't, just a heater for the outdoor building it is in.

Ban the sale of new ones? Or ban the use of them? Neither would surprise me with California.....Ban something that was on it's way out anyway.

I knew Locomotives didn't use Detroit's.....But EMD's are 2-stroke all the same right?

I believe they banned them regardless of age back in the 90's. Today every diesel in the state over 14k has to be a 2011 or newer.

In 1998 I rode a greyhound from Hudson,Wi to Mesquite,tx. I thought the green leaker sounded great...... For about 20 minutes then I couldnt wait for the noise to stop. Bus was a manual too.
They weren't all that loud in buses, well insulated engine bay and decent muffler.
Not any worse than the 60 series that often replaced them.

The irony of retiring the old all mechanical engines that run generators and pollute more than today's electronic tuned stuff, is that if God forbid they ever get hit with an EMP the modern stuff most likely would brick.

Bureaucrocy, ya gotta love it. The only question is weather to laugh or cry.

I've pumped MANY millions of gallons of gasoline and diesel from barges equipped with those engines!

If you ever have trouble starting it with ether, just take off the side covers, spray WD-40 in there, replace the covers and fire away!

Love me some Detroit noise. We had Crown Coach school buses with the 6-71 mounted horizontally under the floor in the middle of the bus. The n/a was a blast to drive with a stickshift. The spec for these was 2300 max no load rpm. I always enjoyed running the rack on those.
