Old 6.2L GM military truck ... Talk me out of this......

how whipped the thing is, how tight the steering is, how leaky the powertrain is, etc.
Agreed. The thing felt tight. Going over road bumps yielded no rattle of any kind, took bumps smooth, steering was nice. This one meets all my used car criteria, other than the lights not working. I noted no active leak, but it was low on power steering fluid. ATF was red and "nice smelly".

I of course expect some BS to come up, but by in large it felt tight
Navy guy probably did unthinkable things in the back of that truck while a Marine watched.
wow, I always thought the Navy guy watched........... @Astro14 ? :ROFLMAO:
What's your intended use?
just to kick around in, something mechanical, with no electronics, cool and unique, hard to find, and usable....this fits all that.....
Not made anymore. Last longer than anything you can buy new.
Agreed. 38 years old, started and ran like a champ
Can it even do the speed limit?
gets up to 50 real quick, power felt good, all 150HP, no tach, but the engine seemed to be purring at 50mph.....on the spreddo, 55 is noted at max highway speed.
I see lots of maintenance.
Like what beyond fluid changes? Probably ATF filter change....

Slower than most other trucks; simple, fairly reliable, but prone to head gasket failure and cracks literally anywhere in the engine-block, crank, & heads. Capable of decent MPG, but not with 4.56s & no O/D. I’ve had 2 6.2s, and only the ‘82 red blocks & ‘92-‘93 599 blocks seem to hold up well. Higher nickel content in ‘82, & the thicker 599 block (also used in the bigger bore early 6.5). Nodular iron crankshafts in a 22-1 IDI diesel were also a bad GM cost saving move.

this is an 86, is that good or bad?

I would be mostly concerned with the cost of repair if anything happens with the engine. Everything else in the driveline should be very reliable.

Can it even do the speed limit? Engine probably redlines at 50 mph. Whenever I pass a convoy of military trucks, they are doing about 45, and even at that speed the engines seem to be screaming.
Nah those trucks stock have extremely tall tires and the 6.2 will rev to self limit at very high rpm’s.

Unless they put a governor on it it will scream along drinking lots of fuel at 70mph.

Good for towing, bad for everything else.

And all of those issues rarely happen if it’s run smoothly and slowly. (My 120hp 82 c-code was driven to the junkyard at 438,000 miles)

The crank is almost always destroyed by the harmonic flying apart thus get a better Harmonic.

The head gasket thing was mostly a 82/83 thing and was caused by something else, at this point every 6.2 that would had the bad head gasket design has either been junked or replaced

Went today to see this truck. CUCV M1008, originally an un-issued Marine Corp Truck. Drove great, stopped and shifted great....etc
For those who dont know:

6.2 NA Diesel
TH400
4.56 gears

Very little if any rust of the body, typical surface rust on the frame.
Interior is great, new bench and dashpad

22k miles

Started very quickly

No lights worked at all, I think it has to do with the blackout system, but told the guy he needed to fix that before I purchase.

$8750
Not sure why I would possibly want to talk you out of that.

Offer them $5500 on the spot and see what happens! I like it a lot but not that price $8750..... is a stretch they trying.

I think he does not need to sell, 8750 come down from 10k.....

problem is, he bought this two years ago, when they were selling around here for 10-12

I would give 5 all day, agreed
Yeah, it is likely worth some more than $5500 but it is hard to place real value on older stuff (special) like that one.
When I was always looking and buying I am certain I over paid for some of my older cars and it just all was driven
by how bad I wanted what I was looking at. Some blew me away and I said "SOLD" right away in fear I would miss
out. I do hear right now everything "new and used" are selling real slow due to lots of things (high interest rates) etc..
Good luck. If you really want I hope you can work out a deal. (y)

Well, yall aint doing a good job of talking me out of it. I have looked for a good one for a long time.

He called me back this afternoon, and said the mention lighting issue had been resolved. I did not know how to operate the blackout light switch....so that works aswell.

Thanks for the thoughts on this fellas.

Most of you all are useless and cannot follow directions :ROFLMAO: .......I am picking the truck up today. Will post pics later.

I could drive it back, but have decided to flat trailer the thing back.

Guilty as charged…
