OK to charge the battery still connected?

Lately it's been cold outside, and I do mostly short trips with my car. So I'd like to give the car battery a small "top up" charge this weekend with a 6A automatic charger.

Question is:
Can I charge it connected to the car without damaging anything? Or is it mandatory to disconnect the load from it?

How much time should I leave it charging? Car start fine and is less than 3 years old...

I see "top up" charging as preventive maintenance only.
 
It will be fine if you leave it connected. A 2A charge would be better. It seems to give a better charge.
 
It should be OK to charge the battery while it's still connected. I do that.

I even wired a cigarette lighter plug up so I can charge the battery without lifting the hood.
 
I do it all the time. My little motorcycle 2 amp charger uses some interesting voltage programs to drive corrosion off the plates and deeply charge the unit. Sometimes the digital voltmeter ramps to 15 VDC in cycles and then falls back off.
 
I do it all the time with my motorsickle batteries still connected to the bikes with a 2 amp charger. I charge them once a month for a few hours.
 
I already posted a thread here about the 6A/2A chargers being inaccurate, especially the 20-30 dollar cheapos that can be bought at any automotive store. The one which I had overcharged the battery in the 6A mode and undercharged in the 2A mode. These so called “taper chargers” should taper the amp flow once a battery comes close to the 14.40V(ideal) voltage when it is considered to be charged.

Check your charger to make sure that you are not overcharging the battery otherwise you may do more damage than good. The 5 stage Yuasa mentioned above is awesome, I’ve had it for over 10 years back from the days when I was a complete punk and did not know anything about battery maintenance. The technology is impressive, excellent to use when bringing up a dead battery (such as leaving the lights on) because it supplies a constant current of 1.5A until about 13.00V when it switches to a gentler absorb mode hence Sooge’s experience about the voltage cycling until it reaches the ideal 14.40V stage when it shuts off and goes into float mode.
Mine shuts off at 14.32V which is just about fine and the float mode retracts back to roughly 13.10V-13.60V. There is lots of discussion as to what the actual float voltage should be and whether it should be temperature compensated, but most “solid” charger manufacturers do choose a slightly different voltage. The purpose of the float mode is to make sure that the battery’s natural drain is compensated for, yet the 13.10V is not high enough to cause any internal damage to the battery if left on indefinitely.
If you are going the route of keeping a topped off battery due to short driving trips, invest into one of these “smart chargers” as they will take care of everything for you, ensuring that each morning you will be able to start for work.
 
I second kgb007stb's post. The charger I have is just a basic 2amp charger- nothing special. I use the multimeter to make sure the battery is properly charged. One of these days I'm going to invest in a decent charger.
 
I agree with kgb007stb, a high quality smart charger like Battery Tender or Yuasa is the way to go. I plug in the Battery Tender and leave it alone without having to worry it.
 
Vector also maker smart chargers that won't overheat a battery and will bring a dead one back to life rather quickly. You can choose how fast you want it charged 2/5/15 and it charges in steps as well saving the 2 amp as a finishing float charge. It also will recondition or desulfate the plates on the charge cycle but not a discharge. You will need to purchase a separate unit for that.

Thats why the Yuasa operates at 15v and pulses as it sends high frequency charges into the battery to break the deposits off the plates.

If the car starts fine, I see no reason to top it off. If the battery is completely dead, I think you just take the amp rating of the battery and divide by the amp/hr charge rate and leaves you with the number of hours. For example a 60amp battery charged with a 6amp/hr charger would take 10 hours. You should use no more than a 1 amp/hr charger for a 12-14 amp motorcycle battery.

The car starts fine, but I felt the battery wasn't fully charged as the starter was turning slower than usual. Like I said, the problem is more the short trips (while using the rear defrost) than a bad battery/alternator.

I gave it a nice top up charge at 1A until the charge Amp dropped almost to 0A on the meter.
