Not sure how to search for this ? If it was asked before?

When you run a motor oil whatever brand I assume it leaves an oil film on all the parts and when you do an oil change do the fresh oil detergents remove that film and it has to build up again? Also I would think if you stay with the same brand of oil it would be better since the refill has the same add pack and this would create less wear. If you try a new different oil that is a different brand and a totally different add pack it can take more time to build up? .... Let me know if I am way off on this?

That sounds like the gist of the situation. Of course there are numerous folks on here with great engines and used oil analysis that are frequently using different oils.

I concur. This is one of those things that sounds good in theory but matters no difference in the real world.

The film of oil is made of ... Oil!
Of course it's constantly being changed, specially at engine op temp.

Maybe the OP was talking about AW layer, phosphate glass or something else...

Yes I was referring to AW wear layer whatever it may be. But like you all say engine prob won't care at all.

The more important issue is the oil's spec's and not the brand name.

I have never had someone else change my oil and I've always wondered if those that are changing the oil ever use a cheaper oil when they do the oil change. Maybe that mystery oil in the barrel in the back that arrives by a hose into the shop is a one size-fits-all oil.

May have been asked before but not in the last few years

It's nice to see serious topics about oil(and/or filters). If you use the same oil every o/c guys and gals will respect you for that.

The basic error is believing the oil film (and corresponding additive package) "builds up" on engine parts. Some additives will deposit on some motor parts but it's an ongoing process and works as the oil is pumped through the motor internals, regardless of the modern oil formula. In other words "deposit" does not equal "built up".

Probably not. It may matter to an OCD BITOGer like me, who uses the same oil time after time, year after year, preferably from the same lot number.
