Oil Stashes

The K&N oil filters are near the top of the heap in terms of oil filters. Most guys don't use them because of their high price. I still have 3 of them in my stash but am waiting until I am done my Auto-Rx run in the van to use them up. Then its fleetguard the rest of the way for me (found a local supplier that sells them cheaper than the local NAPA store for NAPA Gold's.

Good score on the syntec and K&N

Anyways...
To the topic on hand

I figured I would never have a big stash but for some reason I kept seeing good oils on sale. I mean for that price I just HAD to buy it!!! That has gotten me a nice little 15+ gallon stash going of just 0w30 oils. Don't worry the stash bug will hit you faster than you can ever imagine!

I also stash soda and dry goods when on sale. The nice thing about oil is the wife won't go through the cabinets throwing out stuff b/c the date went by.

I'm the same way with sodas too. I've been buying Pepsi 2 Liters at Kroger for $0.84 cents a piece. When they go back up to regular price at $1.50 a bottle. I'll be back drinking Big K soda 2 Liters for $0.79 cents

Boy, I wish I could return to those days.

They are safe to drink up to a year or so. I'm not sure why you shouldn't keep them longer but that is what the date on the packages always says.

Is it an expiry date, or a best before date? BB dates are to ensure product freshness and it won't have any ill effects other than tasting flat or a bit weak. If it's an ED then that's a different ball game and that assures that the product is safe for consumption. (Work in the food industry)

I wouldn't keep it too long anyways, because pop (soda) is usually somewhat acidic from the sugar content and this can eat at the thin plastic coating they put on the inside of aluminum cans and cause it to leech into the beverage and then you consume it and end up with some nasty cancer in the future.

They put the plastic coating on the inside of the cans to keep the aluminum from oxidizing and leeching a metallic taste into the product.

A lot of people who lived through the great depression of the '30s never put money in banks again.
Maybe a lot of people who bought oil in the great crude markup of 07-08 are afraid it will repeat.

Now StevieC, every time a new oil spec comes out folks start talking about doom and gloom. Been doing it since 1955. Modern technology will see you through.

And by the time I get to Canton I will need an oil change.

I don't want "modern" technology to see me through... I want them to leave the formulation alone. I don't see why they have to modify it when all oils today offer a great level of protection and don't sludge like way back when, when used under normal use.

Why make the oil contain less?

That's all I'm saying... I'm not trying to doom/gloom a new spec just because... I'm being truthful.

If one reads what the proposed changes are, there are some pluses, but longevity of the oil and the additives which, IMO, protect the engine the best are being reduced too far for no good reason.

At some point catalytic converters have to be cheaper to replace than more frequent oil changes because of a reduction in ZDDP etc.

If you ask me it's a ploy to get older cars off the road and make people buy cars more often because the level of protection isn't there like it used to be. All in the name of "catalytic" protection and "increased fuel economy".

Funny how with all the modern technology fuel efficiency remained pretty much the same, yet the complexity of working on a vehicle went up dramatically. Can you say "Dealer profitability"

And now we all of a sudden (and recently) have to use and oil that contains less wear additives like ZDDP because it might be harmful to the emission system? Why???

Why not super-protect the engine with a robust oil and it won't damage the catalytic because it won't consume oil in the first place? Oh wait... That's right... Because they want to sell more vehicles and because they feed us the line that "Modern engines don't require such high levels of ZDDP etc." Only engines like those that have Flat Tappets do. Last time I checked there is still a lot of "Metal on Metal" contact in an engine. Sure there is less today, but not enough to warrant the drastic reduction of additives that they have done this far and intend to reduce further.

*UGH* Maybe I don't get it...

Not trying to give you a hard time... But it bothers me that the industry keeps reducing additives in oil. It will probably make for a captive market for Amsoil, RP, RL etc. who either believe in formulating their own way without API approval, or rely on some older approved specs like SL.

I have always thought that everyone had an oil stash. My dryer had to be moved out to the garage so Tony could use the space for his additives, grease and anything that should not be in the heat. He bought those in bulk also. He had two areas in the garage for oil. He always bought oil by the case. I gave away or traded 8 cases and I still have 6 or 8 cases that I can not use in my car. Collecting oil is the something we all have in common. When I buy more oil for my car I will purchase 1 or 2 cases so I will not run out.

Wow, your so understanding. My wife and I are going to get our first house next year. I'm thinking she wants my oil stash to go outside in the garage, but I'm afraid of the heat! I was thinking a room for my car stuff with the oil on a shelf.

Why not go all the way and get a 4 season climate controlled humidor?
