Oil Specs in Different Regions or Countries

I was wondering if the specs for any given oil might be different in different areas. For example, right now I have an interest in finding out more about Mobil 1 ESP. Are the specs for that oil the same worldwide? What about certain Castrol oils, another brand that interests me, or other oils? Thanks!

Not likely at all. What they do for different specs in different countries is add some designation to the oil's name, i.e. Castrol Edge 0W-20 (NA) vs 0W-20 V (UK) or 5w30 LL (EU) vs 5w30 (NA) to distinguish differences.

BMW specs different oils for their engines depending on the market. I own a 2018 M240i and the owners manual calls for 0W20 oil. The same car sold in the European maker comes with 0W30 oil. The specs, other than viscosity, are the same.

Which BMW approval crosses those two grades?

And really BMW doesn't "spec" anything including a grade. They list an approval which dictates an HT/HS and subsequent grade designation.

But those are grades. ACEA sequences and manufacturer approvals are the same world-wide in terms of requirements.

Per the OP's example, Mobil 1 ESP may have Porsche C30 approval which means the same thing regardless of the locality.

I misinterpreted what the OP was asking but you're right, a spec is a spec. Or maybe he is mixing (manufacturer) spec with grades.

Mobil 1 ESP in all flavors will be the same worldwide. For example:

ESP X2 0W20 will be the same in the US as in Belgium.

Actually it's a different approval. LL01/LL04 oils are 30w and 40w. LL01FE is a lighter 30w compared to LL01. LL14 and LL17+ are the 20w oils.

The B58 in your M240 can run any of theses specifications but it was designed to be able to run 20w due to the typical* operating environment and increasing financial pressure with regards to fleet MPG's in the US and other markets where the I6 is popular.

* commuters, grocery getting, limited road tripping/racing due to fact that the initial buyer acquired the vehicle via low mileage lease.

Yup, it's all about CAFE. The car had it last dealer oil change. I'm switching to BMW TT 0w30 oil.

Not really. It has a hths over 3.0 cSt.

It is 3.1 in last GTL SOPUS version. In Castrol supplied, I wouldn’t hold my breath to be above 3.

Its all about the fuel , different regions have different fuel standards for different weather , stick with the OE approval for your mode of operating the car.
