Now have 28 qts. of the 5w30 PENN. PLAT. at $2.90+tax in storage . Was wondering if a synthetics shelf life is any different than a syn-blend or dino-oil due to additives , etc. ? And what is the normal shelf life of motor oil in general ? Thanks
Someone posted here a few weeks ago that they contacted Pennzoil with that same question ref. Platinum. Was told 5 years if kept inside and 1 1/2 years if out in cold garage.
I thought oil was good in a room temperature place, for about 9 or 10 years... am i worng? I have 27 qts of older havoline, 5w30 and 10w30 i bought before deposit shield cmae out, i do my own oil changes every 3 months, i have enough qts, to last me, about 7 years! I too wonder, if it will still be good by then.
I topped up a couple years ago with a couple bottles of oil I found in the garage stamped... 1984? 1986? I forget. SF rated anyway. Looked fine pouring out and my engine has lived to tell the tale.
I recently did a used oil analysis of 12 year old SH rated synthetic that I had run 7K and the results were great. I'd be concerned using old oil that was stored outside and subjected to changes in temperature. I believe that oil stored indoors lasts almost indefinitely. If anything you may get some degradation in PPD.
Best piece of info I have yet seen on shelf life. I just sold off 16 qts of oil so am down to 189 qts. Looks like I am fine for the next 5 to 10 years. I store in cellar from 40 to 75 F.
have 16 qts. of PENNZOIL PLATINUM syn-oil stored in basement and another 12 qts. in garage , just purchased yesterday for $2.90+tax a qt. , current temp outside is about 37 degrees .

Tallpaul: Believe it or not the 12 y/o oil was Valvoline! It was their original synthetic PAO. I probably could have went further but I was concerned about an intake manifold leak on my GM 3.1.
