Purchased a 2008 Dodge Caravan SE 3.3 Liter v6. People I purchased it from have been running Castrol 5w20.. Any recommendations? I'm not thrilled with Castrol thinking about Pennzoil Conventional or Mobil Super 5000

Either of your options should be a good choice as long as your engine runs fine now as it is.
But as Skyship asks, give us more info to go off of!!
 
Cant go wrong with Mobil Super 5000! I'd take that over Pennzoil conventional any day as I feel it has a better additive package. Moly? Who needs moly in todays oils when you have titanium...

Because moly reduces friction making the engine easier on gas and reduces wear. Titanium seems to be an anti wear from what I can see,so it aids nothing as far as fuel consumption.
So who needs titanium when moly does so much.

Hold on now. Your saying moly reduces friction so the engine is easier on gas and reduces wear. Then you say titanium is an anti-wear, so it aids nothing in fuel consumption. According to your logic, since moly reduces friction and reduces wear and fuel consumption... titanium does not do the exact same thing since it is an anti-wear? If it is a anti-wear then it should reduce friction and increase fuel economy. So who needs moly when titanium can do the exact same thing

Moly:

This is most commonly used as an anti-wear/anti-scuff additive and has an effect commonly called “Moly plating” where over time, a thin and microscopic layer of Molybdenum tends to form between contact surfaces, thereby creating a lower coefficient of friction between the two parts. Concentration levels of Molybdenum vary greatly depending on the formulation of each specific oil brand, and viscosity.

Titanium:
Titanium is a newer, more environmentally friendly anti-wear additive being implemented due to more stringent emissions regulations, and is phasing out the older, more harmful phosphorous compounds such as ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate). ZDDP reduces the effectiveness of the catalysts in catalytic converters by creating a plating effect when combusted, and covering the catalyst while Titanium does not. Titanium chemically binds to wear surfaces creating a hard, Titanium based oxide layer which reduces friction, thereby reducing wear. Concentration levels vary greatly depending on oil brand.

Why are you not thrilled with the Castrol? I am just curious if you have had past issues, or has something happened in the new Caravan, that caused you to not like it?

Anyhow, Pennzoil is now the factory fill for Chrysler, and if you get an oil change at the dealer, that is what you will get. Pennzoil is a hailed oil around here, and excellent no doubt. I know a few people, that have used it and love it. I am not overly familiar with the Mobil Super 5000. Always wanted to try Mobil in my Jeeps, but for some strange reason all variations cause an excessive amount of iron wear...

Moly is a friction modifier,which reduces friction. Titanium is more like zddp which does nothing for friction. It's sacrificial at start up keeping moving parts apart until the oil is hot enough to activate the anti wear agents.
I can tell you no titanium additive has ever helped my fuel consumption. But mos2 has improved my consumption by 100kms/60 miles per tank.
Coincidence? I think not.
And if titanium was so great Mobil would be using it in their top tier oil,which they aren't,they are using moly,which tells me more about titanium than any member of an oil forum.
Not trying to be obtuse just pointing out the obvious.
 
Thanks for that, as I was starting to think that Marks & Spencer were making engine oil, when all they have is olive oil!
Mobil don't make bad oils and it seems to be their standard dino. The warranty terms are interesting and are good for 5K miles or 6 months:

I don't like warranties much when small companies offer them, but the majors do try and stick by the terms and pay claims if required.

ZDDP is one of the best anti-wear additives there is.It was my understanding that Titanium works at a lower temperature than moly to help reduce start up wear. Titanium is still relatively new to the oil market, do you think Mobil would roll every oil out with it without first having in an oil and seeing how it does long term? Have you used an oil additive that had very high levels of Ti? If not, how can one be so sure? Look at castrol edge with ti, it is their top tier oil that uses Ti. If Ti is an antiwear additive (which it is) how can it not reduce friction? Did you read my last post which had an article paragraph from here on BITOG states that Ti is a friction reducer? Can an oil additive not have multiple purposes? Ti and moly work similarly that they bond to the metal and create a layer to reduce friction. MANY people on here have found better fuel economy with Mobil Super 5000. Your also not comparing a motor oil to motor oil, additive to additive. You're adding an oil treatment to an oil. There was study that was posted that high levels of moly in oils had more deposits than one with little or no moly.
Im not trying to be obtuse either just want to make sure were on the same page, and that sometimes things aren't as obvious as they seem on the surface...

I just have one questions for you.
If an oil has an anti-wear additive, how can it not be friction reducer?

None the less, you get the best of both worlds when using Castrol Edge or Kendall because you get a health dose of both!
