Let me start off by saying I've been reading your forums for the last few weeks, and been almost overwhelmed by the amount of information and enthusiasts on this site. It's great!
I know there is no one "best" oil, but I'm looking for peoples opinions. I'm actually looking for recommendations on two different vehicles, a Nissan Frontier with the 3.3L non-supercharged V6, and a Evolution IX with the good old 4G63 turbo 2.0L.
1. What kind of vehicle you have
- Nissan Frontier and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
2. What your owner's manual says
- The Nissan calls for 5w30 and the Evo for synthetic 10w30. Nissan is my daily driver, so it would be classified probably under severe service. Right now I change the oil in the Nissan the traditional three month timeframe as I rarely get to the 3,000 mile mark. The Evo gets changed every five months or so, again using Mobil 1 Extended Performance so far. I've yet to do a used oil analysis, sorry I don't have the owners manual with me at the moment.
3. Where you live
- Midwest. Winters down to -20 below, summers topping out at 100 degrees.
4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?)
- Nissan is driven pretty easy, but daily. It's slow and a gas hog, so I try to drive conservatively. The Evo gets driven like a performance car should. Although no track days or anything. Always gets warmed up before any fun though.
5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?)
- Commute to work is around three miles in the Nissan, so never gets to operating temp. The Evo is more of a weekend, fun, non commute car. Evo is usually driven for longer periods, at operating temperature. Both cars easily see less than 6,00 miles anually, with the Evo not being driven in the winter at the moment.
6. Whether your car has any known problems.
- No known issues on either, however the Evo is enginewise stock but, tuned and boosted of course, so fuel dilution is a concern. Not concerned about one year drain intervals, or oil good for 25,000 miles as I don't put those kind of miles on my cars. Not concerned with fuel economy or damaging the converter on the Evo, so an oil with higher additives is fine if it offers better protection.
So cliffnots, looking for oil recommendation for a 6 month OCI on the Nissan, and recommendations for a 6 month OCI best protection oil for the Evo. I have a PC account at Amsoil that expires in a few months as well.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but I know I came to the right place for answers. I'm the kind of person may overthink somethings(which oil to buy) as I always want the best for my money.
