I'm asking for a friend of mine. She drive approximately 80-100 miles a day, some stop and go, some highway. Her car is a 2001 model year and has about 80,000 miles on it. She usually changes her oil every 3000 miles or so and generally goes to a quickie lube type place. Lately her car has been hesitating in 2nd gear (manual transmission) and her oil temp has been running higher than normal. Oil level is fine as is the coolant. I think the hesitation may be due to old spark plugs, but wanted to get an oil recommendation so I can bring some to the mechanic next week. Thanks in advance!

3K OCI should be fine with any API appreoved oil. The problem is the tanny. Since the 2nd gear has problem, the engine rpm may high and cooling may not work properly. Need to check engine and cooling before cosidering any engine oil.

When did she last change the spark plugs? The spark plugs in the GS model need to be changed every 30k miles, while the plugs in the GT model (what I have) can be changed every 60k miles cuz they're platinum. Also, the thermostat could possibly be the culprit for this problem- I've seen it on a few of the 3G Eclipses.

Oh and if she has 80k miles- I hope she has had the 60k maintenance done (clutch fluid, timing belt, coolant flush, air filter, etc.)

She may need a timming belt. Some Mitsubishi engines are inteference which means if the belt breaks say goodbye to engine, their V6 I believe but have it checked out. 80,000 miles may be pushing the belt a bit.

I doubt the plugs were ever checked, but I'll check tonight. I'll also check on the 60,000 maintenance but, again, I doubt it was performed. I'll have my mechanic check everything out next weekend. I was gonna sacrifice some of my GC stash, but from the sounds of it I can hoarde it all for myself. Thanks guys!
