Hello! I just found out about this site and it seems like a great resource.

I have a 2004 Dodge SRT-4 and I was looking for a recommendation on the oil to use. Just as a bit of background the SRT-4 is a 2.4L turbocharged engine. I have been using just regular Mobil 1 10w30. Now from a bit of reading I have learned that the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 is highly regarded as well as Castrol of some forms.

So on to the oil choices. Out of the following oils which would you guys recommend that I use.

-Mobil 1 10w30
-Mobil 1 10w30 Extended Performance
-Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40
-Castrol Syntec 10w30

These are the oils I am deciding between as they are readily available around me. Thanks a lot for all of your help in advance!

I'd use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30, German Castrol or Redline 5w-20.

What does the owner's manual suggest to use as far as weight is concerned? Is there a recommended waiting period before switching over to a full synthetic?

the manual states either 5w30 or 10w30 but one of the main guys from the srt development team has recommended 0w40. in terms of switching over most are switching over at 2-3k and I've been using synthetic for a few oil changes now without any consumption issues.

Go to Wal Mart and see if they have any Esso XD-3 in 0W40. It's a new full synthetic. If they don't have it you have to get it from an Esso bulk plant in Canada. I just ordered a case of Esso XD-3, which isn't available at Wal Mart locally but the 0W-40 is. In terms of a 5w30, have you tried Mobil 1 which is a full synthetic?

Schaeffer 5W- or 10W30 has done well in the 2.4 Mopar. It also did well for one fellow here a few years back with the parent 2-liter in a Neon. Yours is the turbo version, of course, but I think Schaeffer would still be a good choice. Myself, I use RedLine in our Neon (for now). We'll see how it fares when I get to 10k miles.

I would not go to a 0W40. I don't think that engine needs the 40-wt. If you're concerned about turbine heat (and I don't think you really need to be too concerned), then definitely run the RedLine 10W30.

With Red Line, you can drop one grade lower and still have great protection. Red Line 5w-20 HT/HS is 3.3, same as Amsoil 0w30 TSO. Use oil analysis to find the best choice.

Thanks for all the help guys. For this oil change (because it needs to be done by the end of this weekend) I need to stick with more readily available oils at the local stores (advance, walmart, etc). So that eliminates Amsoil and Redline. I'm debating with myself between the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 and the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40. I don't think I want to use Mobil 1 10w30 because I've read its prone to a bit more shear than others over time. Does the Extended Performance version have the shearing issues? Also, where can you get GC? Is it something that needs to be ordered off the web or is it available in stores. Sorry for my noobness :-) Thanks again for everyone's help!

If you want to protect your warranty might suggest you stick with the standard M1 since the EP version does not carry the API certification that Dodge and practically all manufacturers warranties require.

GC is German Castrol, in other words it is a 0w30 weight sold in the US at Autozone stores only. Read the back label of the bottle, the "made in germany" is a dead giveaway. This is another oil that should fare wonderfully in that engine.

I've got some used oil samples in the Used Oil Anaylysis forum, as you will see Mobil 1 10w30 did really well in my srt-4 engine. That sample included some 1/4 mile racing too. The only time I switched up to a 10w-40 was when I went Road racing, it was Redline 10w-40 and held up really well in racing conditions. But for normal everyday driving Mobil 1 10w30 is very good. There are no reports of Mobil 1 10w30 shearing, it is one of the most stable oils in the Mobil 1 line up.

My second choice would be Mobil 1 0w-40 if you are set on a 40 weight, it is a thinner 40 weight so it won't drag down the engine too much, particularly with the balance shaft system it uses. I thought about Mobil 1 5w-40 but I couldn't confirm that it contained Moly, some say it does and some analysis reports show no moly.

I would switched to synthetic oil at 2500 miles, that is what Redline recommends and I trust their judgment since they are in the business. I dumped the factory oil at 600 miles and then ran Castrol gtx 10w30 until 2,500 miles then ran Mobil 1 10w30 after that.

In the 10w30 lineup its been said that the EP formulas contain higher levels of additives, so you might consider Mobil 1 10w30 in the EP formula. Unfortunately we don't get that formula up here yet, but I'd like to try it next time I go down south.

enjoy the car.

well I went ahead and used some Mobil 1 10w30 and got the change done today. Can't beat 20 bucks for 5qts of it. I'll keep reading and maybe in the next change or two I'll try something different. Thanks again for all the help!

I don't recommend that.

The XD-3 0w40 is a really think 40 weight.
