I'm open to opinions on oil type and interval changes and any other advice anyone would like to offer me on this newly acquired 2000 jeep grand Cherokee 4x4 with a remanufactured Jasper 4.7 with about 40k on it. I've only had it for just under 2k miles. It runs almost perfect, no codes, no oil consumption or leaks.
I just serviced the trans and transfer case with mopar atf 4. Along with the rear and front Dana axles with synpower 75w 140.
Came with fresh oil but unknown what it was and a wix filter.
I live in southern Tennessee, most my driving is easy on the pedal and 45min freeway trips to n from work at 60-70mph n the rest is short trips in the city for shopping and food, 5miles or less round trips.
Book calls for 10w30 every 3k for schedule B driving.

45 min highway driving each day for work? You work 5 days? I wouldn't worry about the short trips since it gets a good work out during the work days. I wouldn't consider it "severe" service (all short trips, cold starts etc).

Any quality 5W30 10W30 will work well. I'd probably go 6k miles or more with a quality synthetic oil. Especially if you're doing long drives on the highway (it's the easiest on oil).

Any good 5W or 10W 30 should be fine, unless you have an oil burning problem, which isn't the case here. I prefer synthetic, and like Pennzoil and Mobil 1, so one of those would be my choice.

PYB 10w30 every 5-6k sounds good. Pennz Gold bottle or T5 if you want semi syn.

16 year old vehicle - SuperTech conventional is fine - 10W-30 for 5k miles or use the synthetic for 10k miles - keep it topped off,

I have an 02 WJ with the 4.7

I run whatever 5w-30 Synthetic is on sale. I would also change the PCV valve about every 20K. 4.7 has a lousey PCV system.

Sounds like you changed all the fluids save the coolant and Power Steering, I would look into changing those too.

If your ever doing shocks, pull the springs out and buy the upper and lower cushions and look at the lower spring perches where they are welded to the axle, they rust big time. I would put that on my priority list and clean em up with some Eastwoods rust converter, rust ecapsulator and chasis black epoxy paint. Reassemble and hit em with fluid film.

Go to Jeepgarge.com and do a search on it.

A Jasper motor with 40K, if it's still clean inside I'd make sure to use "Good" oil to get the life out it can deliver. Motor will still be relatively tight, so I'd be all over a good 5W-30 and keep using the WIX filters. If the PO used WIX, they know a thing or two, so I'll bet they used decent oil

PQIA has many good oils in that range to choose from. Me, I'd use a good semi-synthetic like Motorcraft or even Chevron Supreme, and change it every 6,000 miles

In my 4.7 I run PYB 10w30 and 5,000mi OCI. Of course mine has over 160k on it. You could easily stretch the OCI out a bit.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! And also your opinions and wisdom. Glad to see a couple of 4.7/jeep/mopar owners jump in too. I also flushed the brake system with 32oz of dot 3, I'll be swapping out the coolant and power steering fluid too, after this first oil change.
I personally like Mobil 1, based on the fact I own #103/500 89 csx-vnt (Carrol Shelby experimental variable nozzle turbo) which Mr Shelby put Mobil 1 plaques on the rad support, good for him, then good for me. But I do have a friend who is a turbo guru who only uses rotella in his 4cyl gas turbo engines and his cummins ram. can't recall which type or weight off hand n stands by it firmly.
I figure I'll run 5w30 then in the coming cold months n switch up to 10w30 when the warm weather returns.
I also know wix makes a great filter, based on a filter study one of our 2.2/2.5 turbo mopar members performed.
This jeep has a new rough country 4"lift on it n although I cannot find any rust on it, I did see a Lil on the lower rear passenger side coil perch as mentioned above. I pumped all new grease in all the joints and bushings under it, went with Lucas xtra duty tube grease.
This jeep seems to have been shown alot of love in its 16yrs, original paint is very nice aside from a couple light scratches, well kept interior and new suspension kit with the $4500 Jasper long block in it. I just noticed the valve cover gaskets are a Lil wet on the outer edges,a shame to see on such a low mile 3yr old reman, it'll get some new felpro gaskets with this oil change. I like to stay on top of things and with any new to me vehicle, I go over it with a fine tooth comb, looking for anything that I can find not up to par n nip in the butt right away.

To address the questions above, yes 45 min ea way to work, 12hr shifts, 3 days one week, 4days every other week n on my free days it either stays parked unless I'm making a decent road trip to visit friends n family out of state.

*bigt61: how are u using 5yr oci? N what made u decide to use 0w on your suburban n dart? Just curious to know n eager to learn something new.

Ahh

Another Mopar Turbo Junkie LOL, should of known from your Sig.

Have a 90 VNT Daytona, 86 Turbo Z CS with Bigger turbo, +20 injectors, Stg2 puter and 3 SVand exhaust. Also have a 90 Daytona ES Turbo and 3 PT GT's. TO putz around with.

Nice! They are a lot of cheap fun, I got bit by the turbo bug back in 2000 when I accidently stumbled on a $600 88 csxt, been hooked since, I've had a bunch of tds over the years, including 3 spirit rt cars. I've thinned the collection of them down to the 89 csx, a 89 caravan es, and my mod n go fast 93 Daytona converted to full 92 2.5 iroc 8v status, got a fully rebuilt 568,ported head, 3", full suspension work with eibachs, bout to go holset n 3bar on methanol. I'm pretty good buddies with Jackson, aka lotashelbys, been for some 150mph pulls in the 38psi green iroc n the 44psi 89 csx with rt engine n 4", they are a handful to say the least. Good ol cheap fun, can't get better bang for the buck!

I have been running rotella t-5 10W30 in my sons jeep with a 5.2 . Jeeps are not picky on oil buy any good dyno or syn and your Jeep should be a happy camper

on your fluid change , Jeeps have a bad habit of getting air pockets in the cooling system so invest in one of those special funnels for filling your radiator and make sure the front of the jeep is at the highest point to " Burp" the cooling system, and used DISTILLED water not tap water when refilling your cooling system

JEEP= Just empty every pocket
