Hi everyone,

Just bought a beater truck for doing chores, know some of its history as it came from a family friend (his fathers old truck).

1996 Mazda B2300, good ole Ford Lima engine. 102,000 miles on it. We have no idea what brand oil or weight was used in it, only that his pops had it changed at some quick lube place every 3K. No owners manual (yet). Runs good, no leaks. Doesnt seem to burn any oil to speak of.

So what do you guys think? Weight? OCI? Particular 'flavor' of oil?

Thanks

The Amsoil website is usually accurate and it is showing it's spec'd (or maybe back spec'd) for 5w20.

Since it's not leaking, in your climate I'd throw some Valvoline conventional in and with the short trips you're planning, stick with the 3k interval unless/until you want to get a UOA.

Good quality 5w30 like Valvoline or Pennzoil or Castrol and good filter like mentioned earlier and enjoy the new work truck

I acquired an owners manual finally. Specs a 5w30 @ 5000 OCI, 3000 for 'severe', blah blah. Also found several mentions out on the 'net that this engine is back-spec'd for 5w20. Not sure if there'd be any real advantage there on this particular vehicle?

Looks like ST 5w30 might be the ticket... decent, cheap, easy.

To 5w20, or not to 5w20... that is the question.

What do you guys think?

just stick with a 5w30 conventional whatever is on sale. it has probably had 5w30 its whole life anyways.

Sounds alright however if it was me I'd start out with a 5w-20 and monitor how it runs and see if it consumes any oil first.
If it runs acceptably and oil consumption isn't a problem I'd stick with the 20 grade,if it's too loud or if a condition presents itself that wasn't there before then go thicker.
Its easy enough to add a quart of a 40 grade to thicken the 20 grade up if its discovered that the 20 grade is too thin. The 20 grade will contribute to slightly less fuel consumed so I'm of the opinion that start thin and monitor, thicken as necessary,if necessary and modify the grade choice at the next interval.
In contrary to the above posts mentioning a high mileage flavour I don't think there's any point if the engine isn't exhibiting symptoms that a HM oil addresses however using one certainly won't hurt.

If it's back-spec'd for 5W-20, then I'd suggest you forward-spec it for 5w30.

I doubt that the OP will put enough miles on this old dear that a more costly oil would be worth the expense and the climate is moderate enough in most of California that a 10w30 should work well.
Not much to gain with a twenty in this application, which I'd bet has never seen any such oil in its life.

Keto,

I too think a good 10w30 is good for your Mazda truck.

I had great UOAs with ST 5w30, at 5000 miles it did as well as Amsoil or Valvoline.
