Oil Pressure Gauge

My 1983 Chevrolet El Camino with 367,000 miles has an oil pressure gauge problem. The gauge basically looks kind of like this 0-30-60. It has been pegged on 60 most of the time.

Lately when I am driving it will suddenly start working, at idle it is a 30, when I am driving it is at 45 to 50.

I have done auto-rx and I think there is some junk in the oil pressure sending unit that attaches to the engine above the oil filter.

I disconnected the wire and grounded it, I turned the key and it was almost pegged at 60, this would mean the gauge is fine.

Should I clean the connection that attaches to the oil pressure sender.

Do I take the oil pressure sender off and clean it, if neither cleaning the connection or cleaning the sending unit work maybe it is time for a new sending unit.

How do I clean the sending unit.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I think the sender might have some dirt or sludge in it preventing it from working properly... Take it off and spray some brake cleaner in the pressure inlet hole and let it sit soaking then blow the hole out with some compressed air and do it again a few times... Then spray some penetrating fluid in the hole and put it back on the car... This generally works for ones on Mitsubishi engines that suffer from a lazy/non operating effect.

the sender is a mechanical device- pressure against a diaphram, lever with a hinge pin, to a "wiper" that travels over a wire-wound resistor.

They wear out. $20. replace it.

You are saying that this is more of a wear issue than an issue with junk in the oil pressure sending unit.
