More like an even oil coating, the type typically found on a blown strut. Normally I would associate this with a catastrophic failure on a strut that otherwise would have been OK or reasonably new. But this in on a strut that's shot. In fact it's been shot for at least a year. I know this because the strut mount rusted out a year ago, so I replaced the strut mount already. These struts have 101K miles on them. It's on a beater, so it's not like I really care if the struts are shot or not, but with this new development, I have to wonder if this is somehow going to cause a problem (like tire wear issues). Of course, if the one on the other side develops an oil coating then maybe I won't worry about it. On the bright side, if I do replace them, I already have new mounts and the springs are not the originals either, so I would really only have to replace just the struts and maybe that rubber according like piece. If it matters (and it probably does) this is on the back of a front wheel drive car.
