Oil level markings

Changed the oil today on my 2006 G35. The oil was just slightly above the L mark of the dipstick. I looked in the owner's manual but it does not specify how much oil to add to bring oil level from L to H.

Normally I would think a quart between L and H but some have stated it is actually around 2 quarts.I had to add about 1/3 to 1/2 a quart in 7000 km of driving which seems quite reasonable since the VQs are know to use oil. What should the oil difference be between L and H?

Probably a quart. You could add a half quart and see how that changes the reading. When Toyota went to 10k oil changes on the Camry they changed the amount it takes to go from low to full. Now it's about two quarts to go from low to full.

With most manuals that I've read it's a quart. But that could vary.

Not all are a quart. I would just add 1/2 a quart, and check it again the next day.

Every vehicle I have had has been 1 litre but the first time I always try 1/2 first. easier to add than remove

Low to high is 1 qt on my VQ35.

What's the capacity of the engine and, how much oil did you put in?

It holds 4.7L. Since I was going to change the oil out anyways I wasn't going to add oil just to see how much would bring it to the H point before draining it.

It "holds" two different amounts; one includes the volume in the filter, one does not. If you add oil based on maximum capacity but don't replace the filter, you will have overfilled. The manual should give both values.

The cross-hatch area on the dipstick is frequently about a quart, can sometimes be almost two. Remember that a quart and a litre are almost identical units of measure, with a litre being ever so slightly larger.

One liter equals approximately 1.06 U.S. quarts.
