I noticed that, when cold, my engine oil level is an inch above crosshairs. When the engine is warm/hot, oil check yields only slightly above full. Why is this?

An inch above top full mark is prob a qt or so too much...not good for ur engine at all...just remove oil filter promptly and let that drain along with oil IN filter of coz put bk on and u should be ok..check oil level when cold for best accuracy always!!!

Highly unlikely bad ADBV but not impossible of coz! If was my car I WOULD def install new filter just to be safe..adding no new oil..then start up run few min shut off check oil level and go from there!! Im sure its just overfilled.
I let out approximately one quart of oil.

So with a remote filter setup such as this, it would seem to me the system would require additional oil. I'm thinking bad ADBV. As others have said you might want to try changing the filter. Run it for a minute as if you just changed the oil and recheck the oil level.
Over filled, probably a result of a bad filter or not allowing enough drain time when you dumped the oil. My bet goes to a bad filter though.

no harm done and it makes no difference. The question is, how much extra oil does it take
to raise that pool line enough to make contact? I'd say it takes more than one extra quart.

This is also what I was thinking, since when running (and then turned off to measure, but full hot,) the mark was at the top of the crosshairs.
Needless to say.. I drained a little more than a quart, maybe a little less than a quart and a half, and now the mar is to the top COLD.

Nobody discussed the possibility of excess fuel dilution. If the correct amount of oil was installed at the OC, then how does it grow in volume? If fuel, the oil will have a strong fuel smell and seem very thin. If water, the oil will be milky and very unusual looking.

Well, I checked it again cold and it was in fact slightly below the crosshairs cold.
