Oil help for 2002 Jeep 4.0L w/ 68K

I'll make this short. Can someone suggest an oil for a 2002 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L with 68K miles. It's been used in short trips (
I use PureOne and Wix filters and have been using 5w30 mobil 1 in the winter and 10w30 mobil 1 in the summer. I have been reading mobil 1 for this engine is not the best choice. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Maxlife 10w30, with variation to 10w40 or 5w30 based on your climate if needed. Had a little valve chatter in my 92 XJ with 163k, and Maxlife was the only oil that shut 'er up. Moved to it for good, and no problem since, plus she just runs a smooth as can be on the oil. I have used Supertech HM, Castrol GTX, Pennzoil Platinum, Supertech Dino, Havoline (old) and Maxlife is the best oil made for the 4.0 engine IMO....

If you drove longer miles, i.e. more then 20-30 a day, I'd highly recommend Rotella synthetic 5w-40.

But, with your very short mileage, that's probably too thick of an oil; in which case, I agree with the Maxlife suggestion - great oil!

I honestly think what you need - take that baby out on the highway at least once a month. That short trip driving constantly is VERY BAD on an engine, everything collects and builds without getting hot enough to burn off and blow out!

In my honest opinion, short trip driving is more detrimental than any oil choice. I know people like being close to their work, that's fine, but find a day once a month to put in at least 50 miles on that engine or switch duties with another car, if you have two.

I've had great luck using Mobil Delvac 1300S 15W-40 in mine and my bro's TJ's. Our UOA's have been great out to 6K mile intervals. Delvac 15W-40 meets the cold cranking requirements of a 10W oil even though it's badged a 15W so I've been using it all year round. My TJ has 69K and bro's has 115K. Motors run very smooth and are quiet for what they are.

With that exclusive short trip usage, any light oil will do.

..but I'd recommend something like Auto-Rx for the valve noise.

You could use a 20 weight synth and not be too thin in 10 miles ..maybe more.

I agree with Gary about the Auto-Rx.
The valve noise is probably from gum/varnish in the lifters rather than wear. It's taking them longer to pump up from a cold start. The short trips have possibly contributed to the lifter build-up.

I have a jeep 6-4.0L ho, its 14 years old and has 55k but they were hard miles, these jeeps made a lot of valve clatter even new, Ive been reading about them lately they like thick oil 10w-30 is OK when new but my manual says to use 5w-30 between -30f to 60 degrees only. 10w-30 10w-40 0 degrees and up, 20w-40 to 20w-50 30 degrees and up, Ive always used 10w-40 since new, Ive yet to experience the rear main seal leak. I'm switching to 20w-50
This is a great motor, it will outlast the body I love my jeep passed it down to my son.

The 4.0 is bulletproof. I have been taking care of my neighbors Jeep(s) for 10 years. Always Mobil DC 10-30 in her Wrangler, and now Mobil 5k 10-30 in her Grand Cherokee. The Wrangler had 181k on it at trade, the GC has 75k on it. Use(d) ST8's on both. No problems, great engines. Interesting comment above on Delvac 1300. I checked it out, M1300 does have very similar properties for cold crank as many 10-30's. But it is thick: 114 cst at 40. What temp does your area get down to in winter?

Thanks for the replies.

I changed out the 5w-30 and replaced it with Havoline 10w-30. Seems a little better.

I'd like to try Auto-Rx. Anyone know where to get this stuff?
