Since Mobil 1 5w-40 T&SUV is gone, what should I use? I did not notice any GC 0w30 at my local kragen/autozone retailer. They did have M1 0w-40, but I have heard that it shears bad. I usually change my oil around 5k. Should the M1 0w-40 hold up during that OCI?

Thanks

Given how easy Subaru engines are on oil, run 5w30 conventional oil @ 5K intervals and you'll be fine. I don't see any reason to use a synthetic here, especially if the OEM does not require it and you're using the vehicle for normal driving.

M1 0w-40 holds shears to a heavy 30wt in our 3000GT VR-4 which is a twin turbo... as expected.

That said, isnt the WRX specced for a 30wt oil anyway? If so, it really isnt the end of the world, and it is readily available.

I am seriously considering Amsoil ACD 10w30/30 straight weight - its just syn with no VIIs, and so it qualifies as both. Its API SL, ACEA A3 and has a diesel add pack. How can one really go wrong??? Especially given the price.

GC is a good gas engine oil choice, if you can find it. Heck, even if its made in USA, the newest A3 rated euro version is still a heavy 30wt and doesnt seem too bad!

I use dino at a 5k interval in my WRX. Like the other poster says, they are quite gentle to motor oil.

The Mobil 1, 10w30/EP will work fine here and it's infinitely more shear stable than their 0w-40.

As for the service interval, a friend of mine locally run 10,000 mile change intervals with the Amsoil 10w30 in his WRX and it holds up fine. I'd at least consider running the maximum service interval of 7500 miles recommended by Subaru.

I don't think a 5w-40 or 10w-40 synlube is necessary in a stock WRX, unless you do lots of mountain driving in very hot weather.

My son runs Redline 5W30 in his WRX STI and also runs Redline in the trans and diffs. He spends a lot of time researching stuff and he races the car. Some small but repeatable power increase can be seen with the Redline in the diffs according to him.

Motul makes a specific oil for the Subaru WRT, 300 V Power 5W40, used by professional teams, including the factory. The problem with the oil is that it's $25.90/2 liter bottle, ouch.

Do you have the specs? Maybe that would give us more insight into what is best.
