oil for taurus/sable?

I bought the 2005 mercury sable(duratec 24v 3.0L engine) at 100k and but don't have the oil change history, the dealer(where I purchase the car) said they put motorcraft 5w20(a synthetic blend) into it.

I would like to do an oil change and stick with a synthetic brand(if it does not cause leaks), any recommendation for the brand(5w30) and OCI to me? I drive a mixed highway and city and I do a lot of very short trip(1miles) to pick up girlfriend..

Stick with the Motorcraft or any other SM rated oil.

In your Taurus you will not notice any difference and your engine will be just as clean, just as protected as long as you follow the manual for recommended oil change intervals no matter what oil you use.

The Motorcraft oil is EXCELLENT!

Motocraft oil is avaiable at Walmart for $11.50 for a 5 qt jug, about the only thing cheaper is Quaker state and Walmart super tech and only by a small margin. If your happy with it and you can get it for such a reasonable price, why switch. Go with the Motorcraft. I used it for years in my wifes Lincoln and had 0 problems with consumption or any other problems. It is avaviable in 5w20 or 5w30 for that price, either would be fine. I did 3000 mile oil changes because that was about 5 to 6 months for my wifes car, 3000/4000/5000 miles, would be fine, depends on what you are comfortable with, I also use the Motorcraft oil filter, also avaiable at Walmart for a Great price.

Thanks Bill, Yeah I just found that motorcraft 5w20 is highly rated here, quite different from what I read on taurusclub.com

guys there seem to prefer fully synthetic like mobil 1 or amsoil stuff..

Those short trips are what are the toughest on your motor/oil.
Particularly in the winter.
Highway miles are the easiest on your motor/oil.

Might be a good idea to make sure that the other fluids are changed, Coolant, ATF, Power steering........

Thank you Panzerman, I don't know if the previous owner have been putting motorcraft 5w20 in it, the dealer told me HE has put motorcraft 5w20 in it.. for the 700 miles I drove with the car, I think motorcraft is pretty good though, I just wonder if a full synthetic like Mobil 1 would even prolong the life of the engine plus I do a lot of very short trips, don't know if that matters.

Yeah, it is PITA to drive those short trips, the engine is barely warm when I finish the round trip and the mpg really sucks only 12 or 13... I will get to other fluids(don't think they are changed, maybe topped off at the dealer) do you recommend a chain store like firestone to do all those stuff? I never dealt with mechanics but would love to do it myself.

First of all, the drinkers don't like calling Mobil 1 with a "e".

So drop the e and they will be happy.

You will not prolong the life of the engine using Mobil 1 over Motorcraft (or Pennzoil, or Castrol or any other SM rated) oil.

Just follow your manual and do what it says. You'll be fine.

With short trips, the major thing you WANT to do is CHANGE the oil to get the by products and water out which become more with short trips.

Changing the oil is a good thing with short trips. A different type of oil will NOT matter.

When I had my 99 Taurus oil choice was the least of my problems. (another story)

Motorcraft 5w-20 will do the trick but then so will any other proper rated oil. Synthetic oils are for 10,000 mile oil change intervals.

their syn blend is awesome. if you want their full syn, which is harder to find, its almost identical to kendall gt1

You are probably better off finding a trusted independent mechanic to do your work. I have found the chain stores can be high and not necessarily do a proper, quality job.

You will need to ask around to find a good shop in your area.
Some chain stores are great in one place.....and terrible in another.....many are independantly owned franchises, so it depends on the owner.
Most places will let you bring your own oil for them to use.
Just make sure that the mechanic uses it.
You can do the same for oil filters, if you have a prefered brand.

Like Bill in Utah states, short trip driving....particularly in cold weather calls for a more frequent oil change...regardless of what oil you are using.

The fluids your vehicle will call for,other than the oil, Mercon V rated ATF for the transmission AND the power steering, G-05 rated coolant.....sold under the Motorcraft GOLD and Zerex G-05 label.

When a vehicle broke down in downtown Chicago a couple years ago (not mine) when on a youth mission trip, I was impressed with the Firestone shop that we ended up at.....honest, and took care of us right away.
The vehicle needed a solid state radiator fan relay.....dealer part.....they troubleshot right to the part, and got the part.....drove the vehicle around a bit to make sure that it was OK....and spend a lot of time on the phone with the owner's warranty company to get it covered.
I am not sure what street it was on, we were on the Dan Ryan Expressway.....just an exit or so south of that tunnel thing.
The Midas Shop nearby, across from Home Depot was totally booked up, but called the Firestone shop for us to see if they could get us in.
So.....not everyone is out to rip you off, there are nice folks out there.

If you really want a full synthetic, try either Motorcraft Full Synthetic or Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic. Why Kendall? Both Motorcraft and Kendall come from ConocoPhillips

A friend has a 2000 Taurus with the Duratech V6 and says it's the best engine he has ever owned. He now has 310,000 miles on it with no engine problems at all. He did have the rack unit replaced at about 250,000 miles, but the engine and transmission have been very realible.
He has used Mobil 1 5w30 with 8-10,000 OCIs from the beginning and Mobil 1 ATF in the transmission. With good maintaince this car should last a long time.
