Oil for next change on '99 Corolla

My '99 Corolla has about 145,000 miles and is nearing the time for my next oil change. I am currently running Mobil 1 5w30 Extended Performance. Unfortunately, however, this is the year of the Corolla that burns oil. I burn about 1 quart every 1000 miles. Recently it seems to be burning at an increased rate. I normally top the oil off with the same oil/viscosity as what is in the sump, but instead I decided to top it off with some Mobil 1 0w-40. To date, I have topped it off with 2 quarts of the 0w-40 and the thicker oil doesn't seem to be slowing the consumption.

Here are the oil choices that I am debating about for the next change(the car has a 4 qt capacity):

1. Mix 2qts of Mobil 1 0w30 with 2 qts of Mobil 1 0w-40
2. Use Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30
3. Valvoline Maxlife 5w30
4. Switch back to conventional and use Pennzoil Conventional 5w30

I really like the Mobil 1 oil, but honestly I am tired of spending additional money topping the oil off every week with a synthetic. So .... which oil from the above alternatives should I use

My sons 96 Corolla was leaking 1-1.5 qts. about every 1500 miles. He now uses Super Tech High Mileage 10W40 and the leak has slowed down to just under a qt. His engine has 200K miles.

if you are burning a quart every 1000 miles, theres only about half of original oil left when its time to do an oil change... I would buy some quality yet enexpensive gf-5 sn certified oil. I definitely wouldn't waste my money on m1. I get tropartic by the case at sams club really cheap.

If the engine is the 1.6 or 1.8 the oil capacity with filter is 3.9 qts.

May i suggest supertech or mobil high mileage( non synthetic). At a quart every 1000, you are getting no benefit from synthetic over a conventional oil.

I think it was member KCJeep here that suggested using the Super Tech High Mileage oil in my sons Corolla, and it seems to be working.

As your aware you have clogged piston oil return holes, known problem from 98-03. Once its taken hold (over a year) nothing short of a teardown to drill the holes out will resolve it. 0w or a 30 weight will cause that engine to consume like crazy. Worse at high revs/highway, worse with the 3spd transmission. Its a tough little engine and will last quite a while longer with thick oil. Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 or t6 5w40 Full Synthetic helped a little, but ultimately I went back to a cheap 10w40 conventional and sold it (for another oil burner

).

Get whatever conventional oil you can find on sale for cheap, and stock up when you find a great deal on it.

Our Saturn burns a quart ever 500 miles or so. Whenever I find a sale at $2/quart or less, I buy a few cases. Most I ever spent on oil for it was $2.49/quart on a case of Quaker State Conventional.

Mobil Super HM 10w40 is dirt cheap at walmart, and it is semi-synthetic. The 10w30 worked great to stop leaks on my Jeep. It is only $.60 more than Supertech High Mileage.

Use a thicker viscosity of 10W-40 instead of 5w30.

Had 1zz-fed that burned about a quart every 1500-2000 miles in an 01 celica gt. it isn't as much as some people, but it started burning more as the miles piled on.

I've noticed it burned m1 faster than anything I had used on two occasions where m1 was used, so I stuck with mostly Pennzoil conventional until I sold the car at 88k miles.

My grandmother has a 1998 Chevy Prizm with the same oil burning 1.8 engine. We do a once per year oil change with Super Tech 5w30 and she tops it off when needed. I don't know exactly the rate of consumption but it burns so much that any time I check the oil for her it is never dirty on the dipstick even after the full year. She drives around 8-9k miles per year. Her last oil change was a Fram Ultra filter and 4 qts Super Tech 5w30. I tried 10w40 in the past and a few other things and never really noticed much difference. Aside from the oil burning this has been an excellent car for her. I'd buy whatever is cheapest and stretch out your OCI as far as you are comfortable with.
