I'm currently using Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20. My commute currently is through town (no highway), 45mph with a few stoplights. However, my commute may be changing to 90+ mile round-trip driving (keyword: maybe).

Climate: Texas -- consistent 30's-50's right now. Summers will be triple digits.

Stick with the same weight? Same oil? Completely new to Japanese cars.

Most people here will just advise you stick with the recommended weight. if Mazda backs a 5w20, nothing wrong with using Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, even in such temps.

Castrol edge 5w30 is pretty much a 20w oil and is very good and often on sale at Advanced Auto. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 is a fine oil too, could always go with the Mobil 1 0w20 for maximum fuel economy.

In the summer you could go with a thinner 5w30 since this car has zero oil cooling. I use 0w-20 now but will be a 0w30 user next week because I tend to drive pretty hard on twisty roads for extended periods.
