Oil For John Deer L118

I have a John Deer L118 and it is time for the 1st oil change. I would like to use synthetic oil what is your recommendation?

22HP Briggs V-Twin right? Briggs recommends a 5W30 synthetic for all seasons/temps. In Canada I can't see it getting that hot so I would probably stick with that weight synthetic (Around here I use a 5-40 synth. or a conventional 15w40 oil). Mobil 1 would do it for me but I'm sure you will get a lot of other options/opinions....Good luck with it. Nice mower and a dang good engine....

Anton, I know the manual typically recommends 30wt's, but your 22hp briggs V-twin will do well on any 30 or 40wt variation, synthetic or conventional. I'd personally go with Mobil 1 if want to go synthetic. 5w30 or 10w30 will probably be the easiest to find, but again, any good 30 or 40wt will make the engine outlast the tractor! Nice LT for the money BTW!

I also have a new L118 and decided on Mobil 1 5w-40 Truck & SUV. If the temp doesn't get into the 90's in the summer I would go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30.

Hey thanks guys I think I will go with a Amsoil 10-30. Do any of you guys have a recomidation for an oil filter, not wanting to buy it at John Deer $$$$$. I will try a Canadian Tire store but what would # be for cross over. You would think that the brand name guys like john deer would read this stuff and lower the price on items that could be bought at a much lower price than what they are charging?

I just got an L118 about a month ago. At 3 hours, I changed the oil to Mystik SX-8 10/30 synthetic blend (it was handy). Not sure what I am going to run long term, thinking of 15w40 ....

If you have a Wal-Mart around a Supertech 3614 (ST3614)will go on just fine, $2.07 here in the states, I don't know what it would be in Canada. It is a little bigger than the factory filter but it has the same gasket/bypass settings/thread sizes. It is a good, cheap alternative to the factory one if you have the clearance for it. Wix Part #57035 is another good filter and is the same size as the Briggs filter if clearance is a problem. It may also be cheaper if available in your area. If you do a search on this board for lawnmower filter cross reference someone published a complete list of cross referenced filters with sizes so you can figure out what you can get on there. Those two filters would be my suggestions though.....Hope this helps. You will usually pay more for OEM stuff, just look at parts from a dealer vs. Auto zone Etc...Some (maybe most) people don't or won't take the time to check this stuff out and find a cheaper alternative to OEM...

Anton, I'd hold off on using synthetic until you give your beast 2-3 oil changes. You'll notice the first drain or two will come out with a fair amount of silver bits ... although it would be much worse if your motor had no filter.

So, OK with the Amsoil, just wait before you begin using it until all the break-in debris is flushed away with cheaper oil run for shorter durations.

I was able to cross-reference over to a Canadian Tire filter PH 3600 $5.00. I put regular 10 30 oil for now then after a few more changes I will switch it over to synthetic. The new filter is twice as long as the old one but there is a tone of room.

Yep, the PH3600 or equiv. is the big boy. If you can fit it, have at it! I run the wix equiv. on my kohler command 20hp. You get some extra oil capacity for these hot running beasts.
