I have a Ridgid 5700W generator with Yamaha MZ300 engine. Currently running Castrol GTX 10w40 oil in it. Right now I'm in the middle of a 96 hour power outage. Changed oil from the yamaha lube it came with and all i had on hand was Castrol GTX.

The manual calls for 10W40 oil, what would be my best bet for something that I can source locally (Walmart, Advance auto, Autozone, O'reilly, Napa)

Thanks

Probably any 10W-40 you can get cheap. Some will recommend A syn in 0W-40 or 5W-40, depending on your climate. T6 comes to mind as a good value in syn 5W-40.

You sure about that?

"Engine lubricant has a major influence on engine performance and service life. For general, all-temperature use, SAE 10w30 is recommended. Always use a 4-stroke motor lubricant that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service classification SJ."

The MZ300 takes one quart -- Rotella T5 10w30 is available at Walmart for $5/quart.

Yeah I was thinking that but wasn't sure if it would be ok being 30 instead of 40 weight. Right now it's not hot, but in summer if I have to run it it does get not here.

The 15w40 is probably fine in SC.

I was thinking about this one too, just not sure how low a temp I can run it in as a 15 weight

As cold you would need in South Carolina.

It's a newer generator? If so then fuel dilution is not so much of a problem I'm assuming. Especially since they are advising 100 hour OCI's, B&S advises 50 hour OCI's. B&S advises that above 80*F there can be increased oil consumption with regular 10w30 oil. They recommend their own synthetic 5w30 for all temp ranges and less oil consumption. If you're running it long hours at a time it might be better to use an oil that has a lower volatility such as most synthetics exhibit. Running a XW-40 will most likely cause a little extra fuel usage at worst. There is no "standard" answer, see what works best for you.

Yeah, it's a week old. Got about 80 hours on it at the moment. Used the Yamaha oil for first 20 hours and then put Castrol GTX 10W40 for the past 60 or so hours. Currently day 5 of a power outage due to ice storm in SC.

Once I get power back ill change the oil and store it, cranking once a month.

When you exercise it put a load on on, it'll help keep it producing power when you need it again in an emergency. Have you had to add oil during these 60 hours, if so how much?

Nope, no appreciable oil usage thus far. Every time I refuel it I check the oil and it's pretty much on the same spot in the dipstick.
