Oil for E-Class Mercedes

Looking for a used 04, 05 or 06 E-Class Mercedes Wagon. When I was looking at a Mercedes Stealership, they could not (or would not) tell me what oil they use. Under the hood of a sedan I saw, it said that Mercedes wants you to use Mobil 1. (which one?)
There is a local repair shop nearby that only services Mercedes, BMW and Volvo. Went and talked with them, and they said that they always use Mobil 1 5W-20 oil in their oil changes. He also said that the E320 and E350 take about eight quarts.

Also, anyone know about special oil filters that Mercedes uses?
The 02 E320 I looked at today had to oil filter right up on top (Upside down) at the front of the engine and it looked like it would be easy (???????????) to change.

Hmmm..I thought 'any' Merc. needed Euro-spec oil, so it would be Mobil 1 0W-40...I can't imagine any Euro vehicle using a 20-weight..MAYBE an A3 30-weight, but 20?

Hi Bob,
MB here in Australia use Mobil 1 0w-40 in all models and have doen for several years

The "fleece" filter should be used as is MY suggested

The items required are dependent on the MY for a number of reasons

Doug is correct. I believe it's the same for the US. All dealers across the board use Mobil 1 0W-40 and a fleece filter (where available for model). This has also been back-specified for older models. MB has also approved 5W-40 due to its popularity.

The fleece filter has a higher contaminant capacity over the regular paper filters, which makes it suitable for extended drain intervals with synthetic oil.

Don't let anyone use 5W-20. These engines require xW-40 oils.

OK, thanks for the information on the 0W-40. As for the filter, I checked in a filter manual, and it does not even list a filter for Mercedes. I then looked up on the net, and these fleece filter are sold with a lot of rubber "O" rings. Looks like the filter housing is right on top but I would not do it myself without watching a Mercedes Tech change a filter first.

Changing the cartridge oil filter is a breeze. My wife's '04 ML350 has the same filter setup. Once you remove the filter cap, it's all self-explanatory. You'd have to really try hard to put one of those rubber o-rings in the wrong place.

Basically all you do is this:
Remove the oil filter cap.
Pull out the oil filter & the plastic "shaft" that the filter slides over.
Pull old filter off of shaft.
Remove old o-rings, and slide the new ones onto the plastic shaft. (Put a little oil on them to make it easier)
Slide new filter onto the plastic shaft.
Slide the whole assembly back into the oil filter housing. Replace cap. (I only tighten it a little more than hand-tight)
You're done!

Replacing the filter and o-rings is so simple, a monkey could do it blindfolded.

Also, you'll need a cap wrench to remove the filter cap. The size I use is 76mm with 14 flutes, commonly available at most auto supply houses.

Draining the oil with the underbelly pan in the way is another story.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I figured it would be easy but had to know for sure.

Now, all I have to do is find a good 04, 05 (E320) or 06 (E350) at a reasonable price. Has to be a wagon as that is what I need and I don't want an SUV.

Have some health issues at the moment, plus I have to take a trip up North at the end of the month, but will start looking (internet) again when I return and if my health holds out.
