Oil for cream separator from Ukraine

Hello All:

I purchased a small, hand-cranked cream separator from Ukraine. The manual calls for adding "machine oil, industrial oil of И-12А or И-20А grade ГОСТ20799-88" to the gear box. (The backwards "N" in front of the "-12A" and "-20A" is the Cyrillic letter for "I".)

Does anyone know what grades these are equivalent to in the United States? From other research that I've done on the cream separator, it appears that ND-10 oil will work. I plan to use sewing machine oil (presumably 10 weight) if I can't find a better solution.

Should the oil be approved for food preparation?

here is a big guess. klotz brand, benol. it is castor oil for RC engines. being castor it is food grade. OR a good grade castor oil at the food store. just a guess.

I don't know if you tried this but, I'd open Google Translate, set it for Russian to English translation, you'll get a Cyrillic on-screen keyboard (you may have to click on the keyboard icon). Then type in the characters from your oil to get them on-screen. Highlight and copy the characters, then past into Google and search. You'll get a bunch of Russian hits. Then cut and past back into Google Translate. With a bit of work and some luck you may hit something useful. Bit of a treasure hunt. Good luck.

Just thought of something, Ukrainian is a little different from Russian, but it could be in either language (you may have to set Google to "Ukrainian").

You brought back memories. As a kid I remember going to the local International Harvester dealer and getting a fresh can of cream separator oil. I think it was similar to what was sold as milking machine vacuum pump oil. Look for a dealer in dairy farm equipment and check for vacuum pump oil. Does not have to be food grade I dont believe as it never comes in contact with the milk or cream. Thanks for the memory.

Since we cannot purchase Tymoshenko-branded oil stateside due to export restrictions, the OE brand oil won't work. But the good news is that stateside the use of Mobil Velocite 10 is indicated for hand-operated cream separators, to lubricate the worm drives. The bad news is that you have to get it from a dealer and the smallest quantity available may be a single case.

Other ideas I've seen included hydraulic oil and even automatic transmission fluid, but I also saw warnings not to use mineral oil.

Proceed at your own discretion; if Mobil no. 10 Velocite isn't available, then give some ATF a try.
