Oil for BMW 328i (M52 engine)?

I just had one of my techs do the vanos reseal kit on a customer's 2000? E39 525i. We quoted 4.0 labor hours to do it, went smoothly enough. I never heard back from the customer as far as if the car felt different after the reseal.

I have a 99 528i, with 118K miles

can I use Mobil 1, 5W-20 in it?

Or should I mix it with something. I don't want to throw this oil away, I have no other car I can use it in.

No, not at all. This is completely the wrong spec for the engine.

Look for something with ACEA A3 on it.

Mobil 1 0W40, German Castrol 0W30, just about any 5W40 or 15W40 HDEO.

No. It doesn't have the BMW-LL specs.

Just keep the oil for future use, or give it to someone who can use it.

Mine doesn't, but some of them do. If not, then AZ, AAP, or PB will have it.

My "ChinaMart" in northern NJ carries lots of Mobil 1 0W-40. Take your 20 weight oil back for an exchange. Though the Mobil 1 0W-40 is only in quarts.

Whimsey

Since my old thread got bumped, I might as well give an update. The car is now at 206k miles and doing great. I'm still using the Mobil 1 10W40 HM at 6k intervals. According to a used oil analysis, this oil is working well for me.
