Oil for a Mazdaspeed 3?

Hello all, I've been lurking around this forum for sometime now but this is my first post.

This may have been asked before but there are so many threads here I couldn't find one.

I drive a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3, 2.3 liter Direct Injection Turbo. I am now using German Castrol 0W30. Fuel dilution seems to be a big issue for these cars.

In your opinion which oil out there would be a good choice for this car? I am posted to Greenwood, Nova Scotia, Canada and some oils are impossible to find in my area (Red Line, Royal Purple, Amsoil) and shipping off the internet is outrageous. I can find PP and GC, but even those get scarce sometimes.

Should I stick with the GC? Go with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 which seems very popular? Or maybe Mobil 1? Also, some I talk to are running a 5W40 with this engine. Good idea?

Mobil 1 5w30 Extended Performance should work well in that engine. Is that available in your area? Although not turbo charged, this oil is fine in my two Fords.

Any good off-the-shelf synthetic 0/5w30 would be fine in Winter. In summer, I'd personally stick with that if you're doing a fair amount of highway. I might go with a 0/5W-40 if you're doing a lot of city driving in the summer...

use the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer. It has been tested to death! Factory oil recommendation works from Nova Scotia to Death Valley.

That PP is the best deal going with the rebate.

If fuel dilution is a big concern, then best to keep to moderate OCIs. And in that case, no point spending big bucks on expensive synthetics. Just grab whatever brand name synthetic you can thats cheapest. Ie PP, M1, Syntec etc... Btw the GC you are running is a good oil.

Go with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. You find that your UOA results get better and better, but I wouldn't push the OCI much past 5,000 miles which the required for the warranty anyways.

I run Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in my CX7. I do 6,000 OCI and used oil analysis are very good. Fuel dilution (typical 0.75-1,5%) has not been a factor affected my wear values. Too many self-appointed experts look at fuel first instead of the wear values first. The fuel dilution has reduced as my engine broke in to ~ 18,000 miles.

Don't change anything! GC 0w30 is ACEA A3 rated with a good HTHS.

The others, well theyre not. Theyre more along the lines of lighter duty PCMO that kind of are a jack of all trades, masters of none. Now as someone will feel obligated to bring HTO-06 up, only 2 mainstream Energy Conserving 5w30 oils were tested and have that turbo deposit rating from honda, but those oils actually need that.

Also, don't waste your time with the unending insincere peddling of Mobil products by certain lobbyists 'members'.

Why not get a used oil analysis done and settle the question? As Max stated GC is a good oil. I use PP, partly because it is easy for me to find at a fair price AND it returns good used oil analysis.

Something with a good NOACK like Redline would work well for the DI engine. It should help keep intake tract deposits down and has one of the if not the highest HTHS for nearly every weight.

LOL. I pretty much agree with that. Some of the oils mentioned would be a downgrade from what he's already using.

I think that Mazda allows the use of 40-weight in the Speed 3...there was a thread on that in here a little while ago. Don't know if it was confirmed.

IF that is the case, I'd use a 5W-40 in that car.

I will look into getting a used oil analysis done. When is the best time in the OCI? DO you do one halfway, or just one when you change it to see if it was doing ok and would have lasted longer?

I take my used oil analysis sample at oil change time. No value to me by taking a used oil analysis sample at short OCIs. Run the oil out to the factory recomendation and adjust your OCI based on the results. JMO. Ed
