Oil for 6.7L Cummins

Debating oils for my 6.7L Cummins. It has no egr or dpf.

I’ve been running whatever I can get the best price on…..Kirkland, Rotella, Delo all in the 15w-40 flavor. I’ve been doing a 5k oil change even though the oil minder will send you to 15k or it says change at 7500 for less than ideal conditions like towing, stop and go, ect.

I regularly pull 10,000 pounds. I am considering going to HPL or Amsoil and running a full 15k interval with a fleet guard stratapore filter. What protects the engine best? 5k cheap oil changes or 15k premium oil changes? Price is about about the same.

HPL and Amsoil have several diesel options including the Amsoil Marine Diesel oil that many people run in older diesels without emissions.

Can't go wrong with any of them. Off the shelf conventional/syn blend or boutique. Short intervals are always best at the end of the day and an engine will last when you do that no matter the oil as long as it's bare minimum which all hdeo's are even the cheapest. Many crummy gas engines lasted forever when those that owned them did religious 3k intervals and never saw oil consumption, bearing, or timing issues common with them and in those stories it was usually conventional or synthetic blend that was used not even an off the shelf full synthetic let alone boutique.

The best priced oil I can get is mag 1 15w-40 which goes for 2.99 a quart in 10qt jugs on lowes.com. My old trucks run as good as ever on it. It's made by warren highline which makes supertech and other oils.

Cummins guys love delvac extreme and valvoline on other forums. That and Delo XSP and the new Valvoline heavy duty diesel oils are great. I wouldn't worry about doing 15k intervals with any off the shelf full syn hdeo. But if you wanna scratch that itch get amsoil or hpl even if it's their lower cost hdeo options. They hold a lot of oil so it's not the same as a 5qt sump car.

On my 2017, I was running full 24,000km indexes on nothing fancy, semi synthetic and conventional 10w30 for years. Tested fine with full emissions and tested fine deleted.

Don't over think it. Pick an oil that meets the Cummins requirements and a viscosity that works for your climate. Pick a 30 or 40 weight and go.
