Oil for 2006 Ford 6.0 PSD

I just received an e-mail back from Mobil that states the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV formula meets both the CI-4 Plus specification and the Ford WSS-M2C171D.

Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is NOT the same as Delvac 1!!!

Read the labels... Truck & SUV is only CI4+ rated. Delvac 1 is CI4+ rated. Delvac 1 is more expensive and if they were the same, why would anyone buy it???

Their website shows only CI4 for Truck & SUV and if the spec sheet, website and bottle don't show it... IT IS NOT CI4+ RATED!!!

I called the Mobil 1 number and they said the same thing. I called coporate engineering and they said they are two different oils and therefore different specs!!!! They said the same thing... sorry for the mis-info, but read the lables and believe what you can see and not what you hear!!!

Sounds like good advise.

I have run Motorcraft for 59,000 in my '03 Excursion 6.0L and just switched to Rotella Synthetic (5W-40) for winter performance and will stay with it year-round.

It will blow the engine up more than likely.

Just kidding, I'm running the Supreme 9000 5W-40 in my 6.0 now and my truck likes it. There are a number of people running Schaeffer's products in their 6.0 with excellent results. I've run the Supreme 7000 15w40 in my 6.0 with excellent used oil analysis. You can't go wrong with Schaeffer's products.

Let's look at it another way. Delvac 1 is presently priced way more expensive than auto parts store oils, even the synthetics. Plus, it is presented as a commercial fleet oil, not a "SUV" oil.

So they put the Delvac in a different container, label it Truck and SUV, and leave off the CI-4+ label. That way, they can sell it at almost twice the price to those fleet buyers and others who insist on a CI-4+ label, and sell it at a "normal" Mobil 1 price to those who do not insist on a CI-4+ label.

You are right, in a way. If they put the CI-4+ label on the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, maybe less people would buy the Delvac 1. But just because CI-4+ is not on the label does not mean that the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV does not meet it.

And if you called a Mobil 1 information 800 number, do you really think they would admit that they are selling essentially the same product, in two different packages, with a 100% difference in price? I don't.

Its marketing. Why do airlines sell some seats on a flight for $100 when others in the same cabin are paying $300?

I believe the oil analyses show little or no moly in the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV stuff, but higher levels of other things. Other than that, the specific gravity, viscosities, pour points, etc. are identical.

Oil marketing is like the bottle of orange juice in my fridge. It reads in bold print, '100% orange juice', and in smaller print, continues, 'from concentrate with other ingredients'. One thing I like about companies like Schaeffers is that it's easyer to figure out their products and get some idea of what you are buying. I'm expecting a label in the future from Castrol or Mobil that reads 100% synthetic except for those ingredients that are not synthetic. Or, how about this oil meets all manufacturer's specs. Better yet, this oil performed better than other oils in all our tests.

It is difficult to find ANY co. that publishing a third of the tests and data we do with any of our lubricants.

Just out of curiousity Jakebrake,

Does your truck have the factory billet grill on it?? I'm a real fan of the Ford PS SD truck.

If it were my truck(I wish

) I would be aiming towards Shell Rotella T 5w40, Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 or even Delo 15w40. Good luck with your new truck! op

No...it does not have the billet grill...I think that comes with the "chrome" package, or the "Amarillo" package, or "Harley-Davidson" package, or something like that. I did change the oil to Rotella 5W-40 at about 640 miles on the odometer.
Just returned tonight from a 1000 mile round trip to St. George, Utah. This trucks sure runs down the road good. Have a little over 3000 miles on it now and when I change the oil at 5000 I am going to have a sample analyzed, and send in a virgin sample also.

Im new to the diesel truck world, bought a 2004 6.0 PSD had 8000 miles on it, in my area the Mobil 1 TRK/SUV 5w-40 synthetic is readily available to me and from reading the posts thats the oil I want to switch to at the next change(I am a firm believer in the synthetics) my question is will this be the right oil for towing purposes or am I better off staying with a 15w40. Thanks Eddie

I am going to switch to Shell Rotella T 5w-40 Syn.
I have 1,600 miles on the clock, but I am unsure when I am going to make the switch over. I might wait until the 2nd or 3rd oil change at 5,000 or 7,500 miles. I am also going to add a By-pass oil filter on one of these changes.

The 5w-40 viscosity will tow just fine.

O.K. I changed the oil at 3001 miles, put in Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 again along with a fresh filter, and took a sample to send in for analysis. Also, I am sending a virgin sample along so we can have an up-to-date VOA on this oil. I know the oil could have gone longer but old habits die hard...and I want to know if there is any fuel dilution of the oil...might give me a indication of anything else going on within the engine. Should have a report late next week.
