Help! 30 micron pleated mesh filter with 16psi differential (across the filter) bypass valve. 20W-50 oil with 100C cSt = 20.5 and 40C cSt = 181.8 and Viscosity index is 132. Oil temperature is 140 to 200F and measure pressure (downstream of filter) is 70 to 90psi. Any idea or way I can calculate the dp across this filter under given conditions?
 
Well I think you would need the flow specs from the filter mfr. I.e. 1 gpm @ X psid, 2gpm @ Y psid. Also the viscoity of the fluid they used for testing. Then you need to know the exact volume your oil pump is pushing at various rpms - as installed. Then it should be pretty easy to get a fairly accurate guess.

I'll go back to System One, maybe I just talked to the wrong person the 1st time??? Perhaps one of you could tell me what good the Cst specification of oil is. If flow is that hard to calculate is the viscosity and related numbers only good for relative comparisons?

From what I gave can above can you say if the base stock for this oil is 20W or 50W?
This oil is not a base 3 or 4 synthetic or blend, but has a Vis index of 132. I thought base 1 and 2 only went to 119. How is this possible? Also the Zinc is .137 and Phos is .125 wt%. What does that convert to if it read in ppm like in a Blackstone test? tks in advance
 
Agree with Jason. Unfortunately hydraulic calculations are not as easy as electrical calculations. You would have to know every variable of flow for each piece, bend, curve, fitting, etc. Testing is about the only way to evaluate. You could try to install an upstream presure gauge and compare that to downstream.

You need two oil pressure gauges, one upstream and one downstream of the filter. Now we don't want to go drilling hole into the block. Perhaps you can get a piece that screws on where the filter goes and tap into that, since you could tap it and clean out the debris before installing it. Bypass filters come to mind as do the oil coolers that fit between filter and block and a coolant hose passes through. Probably could have a piece fabricated at a machine shop.
 
Yes measuring the d.p. would be easier if you really need to know. Easiest would probably be to use a remote mount filter and tap into the lines.

As far as Gp I and II only having VI of 119 and oil have 132 VII... you are comparing raw basestock to a finished lube with additives. And no you can't say actual basestocks used. There are many combinations that can be used. The subject has been discused many times before here, if you need more info.

Those Zn and P would be 1370 and 1250 ppm.
