I'm having difficulty getting at an oil filter on a 1987 B2000 pickup, the filter is on the side of the engine in the middle under the air cleaner assembly, I can reach the end of the filter from the top, but can't reach it from the bottom (no ramps yet). I was wondering if anyone has used one of those filter wrenches that fits on the end of the filter and you insert a socket wrench into the end to loosen it, are any good? I've only used the old type of wrench that fits around it.

We use the endcap tool everytime if possible,another couple of the best are Daiken pliers and the Facom strap tool - this adjusts with a knob on the end and can ratchet in impossible places.
An old fan belt works pretty good sometimes. Just loop it over the filter, cross the belt in the middle, and pull on the side that will loosen it. of course, this only works if the filter is not on TOO tight.

I prefer to use the type of tool that is a cap that fits over the end of the filter and uses a ratchet that fits in the end, when there is room. The problem is that there are a great number of different shapes and sizes that depend on the filter brand. No problem for me because almost all my cars take the same filter, and I stick to the same brand all the time, but without a filter to take to the store to be sure you have the correct tool..... trial and error can be mostly error.

There is no better filter tool on the planet-period. Its better than the K-D tool. If your filter is bigger than 3 1/8-they make a larger size:

If you go for the end cap wrench, get a metal one. I got plastic and it stripped out at the wrench socket. Went to metal, no worries.
On some cars, especially Hondas, the plier type wrenches seem to work best for me as space is very tight.
