Yep, go with a filter that clears the exhaust. You're asking for trouble otherwise.

You have lots of options available for that engine. Don't know exactly which filter you're running, or exactly which one your engine calls for- but a Duramax oil filter is one option for a bigger filter with a built-in bypass valve. Might be worth looking at.
